Neo Instruments Ventilator 2 big fan here+ Electro v Vox

Postby Coler » 08 Apr 2019, 00:06

Just rehearsed with this for the first time. I was playing my Vox Continental through a QSC 12.2. Wow it really brought it to another level. I still have to play around with the settings more but even straight out of the box it adds so much texture and...swirl? And the drive is just so good. Exactly the right kind of dirty.

I have to try it with my Electro 6 HP next.

On another note I've ended up with these two great keyboards but not sure how much of a well-matched pair they are for gigging (playing orihinal blues, roots, Americana in a four piece).

The thing I don't love about the Vox is the keybed for playing piano but I love everything else about it (the simple, intuitive selections, I think the sounds are great, I find the digital drawbars fine for me, it's pretty light weight, I don't need splits...).

So I bought the Electro 6 HP on a bit of an impulse primarily for the better action and now I feel like I should have just got some kind of hammer action midi controller...then I thought screw it for some gigs I'll just use the Electro on the bottom for piano and the Vox on top for the other stuff. For smaller gigs just pick one based on whether it's mostly piano or mostly organ...I don't know. I guess I'm asking whether folks think these two could work as a decent pair.

I'm lucky enough that the money is not a big deal so maybe I should just enjoy them both and not stress it.

You're right, the Ventilator is a great sounding Leslie simulation. I've been using multiple Vents since they first came out and love them.

As for your keyboard rig, I think you have some duplication between the Korg and the Nord. Have you considered using just one of them to keep it simple?

The Electro 6 and the Vox except for the keyboard action are really the same category of keyboard.

I gig with a NS3 Compact (which replaced my electro 5 - both semi-weighted waterfall) and an Alexis QS8.2 with a weighted piano action. In my view, given the history of the Electro line, the 6HP is really sort of a compromise on the key bed. Its intended to give somebody who is really a piano player a single keyboard they can play some organ and basic pad parts with, but its not really a good option for organ or synth parts.

There are essentially three basic categories of keyboard actions.

Synth
Semi-weighted Waterfall
Weighted

You really don't want to play organ or synth parts on a weighted action and its preferable not to play piano parts on a waterfall or synth action. Its not that you can't its just that it will affect "how" and in some cases "What" you can play.

For example your not going to be able to do fast run horn parts on a weighted action and you'll even have problems doing them on a semi-weighted waterfall action. The keys simply simply don't respond fast enough.

Personally you'd really be better off looking for a weighted action keyboard as a compliment for the Vox.

Thanks very much for replies.

I agree the more logical rig for gigging two boards might be vox with something with a weighted action or the Electro 6 HP with a synth/organ type action.

I find the vox action nice and light, especially when I tweaked the response. Coming from an acoustic piano background and not being experienced with playing organ I found the true organ/synth keybeds too light in fact which was partly why I picked the Vox. I mostly play B3 parts with my band, which as I say is new to me. I just can't play anything with the piano engine to my satisfaction.

I could stick with the vox in the organ role unless/until I find the keybed limiting me (may never happen!) and then replace it with something lighter.

I find the Electro action very...interesting? And I'm glad I got it, even just to check out the Nord line. I think over time it will be satisfactory for piano parts when gigging.

Or maybe I will be able to improve my piano playing on the Vox.

Anyway much food for thought. I will keep working on them both and over time the solution will present itself

This post more suited to the Electro forum perhaps but wow I am really enjoying playing my Electro 6 HP.

Probably a reflection on my ham fists because I am far from accomplished but I have been playing piano (self taught) for say 30 years and the HP keybed gives me have plenty of scope to play expensively.

Obviously a fully weighted hammer action would be on another level again but this is fine for me. When you consider what else the unit can do in this size package it's fantastic.

But I do agree that the keyboard is not geared for organ/synth. I am only starting on that journey and I can say even now that I would not want to go any heavier than the keybed on the Vox for that.
