More Expensive Sub, Noticeably Better Sound?

Postby lawman » 09 Feb 2020, 14:35

I bought a pair of RCF TT08-a's for their high-quality sound, even though I don't need their 2x750 watts of continuous power in my small (200 square-feet) studio. I also have a Yamaha HS8S sub rated at 150 watts of "Dynamic Power," which someone from the company told me equates to around 70 watts continuous. I'm thinking about upgrading my sub to be more in line with the quality sound of the RCF's. I don't feel like spending 2000 smackeroos for an RCF sub, but I am thinking about a $999 QSC KS112, boasting 2000 watts peak and 1000 watts continuous. I don't need that much power in my little studio, since the Yamaha puts out enough volume for my purposes. What I'd like to know is, would an upgrade like that actually make a noticeable and cost-effective difference in my low-end sound, given my modest volume levels? My instruments are a Nord Grand and a Hammond XK-3c (with Vent II). Does anyone have any opinions on this?

You must be doing a lot of bass-heavy material to want deeper bass than the RCFs deliver. Seriously.

I picked up a used RCF 12" sub for $800 used locally, but it's for the band PA, not me. I have no direct experience with the KS112, but it looks to be able to do the job as with other QSC K series products. Unless you spend a lot of time on the far-left of the keyboard, I'd spend the money upgrading elsewhere -- like a pair of rocking IEMs.
I think I have gear issues ....

I just purchased an RCF Sub 705-AS II B-Stock to go with a set of Turbosound iQ8s.

Price was $679.99 USD from Pro Audio Star. I've generally had good experiences with them although customer service can be slow. The KS112 also looks pretty good and was on my short list, but decided to go with the 15 RCF as it should have a bit better low frequency response.
