How to get the tactile feel of a piano?

Postby fieldflower » 16 Feb 2019, 22:12

I've been thinking about something...
I love my NE5, but there's one area where my Yamaha P155 is better, and that's that the Yamaha with it's built-in speakers also gives the tactile feel of playing an actual piano.
To me it makes a lot of difference when I'm playing to get that feeling of the sound resonating through the keys, specifically on piano sounds.
Perhaps not on a loud stage, but when playing in quiet places.

Is there any way to achieve this on a Nord? Without harming it of course.
- Building in speakers feels pretty undoable.
- Perhaps hard-mounting speakers works, but that takes a toll on portability.
- Would it work to attach a bass shaker..? Or would that harm it over time?
- Or are there thingamajigs that does this already?

No you are not. I am missing this feedback, too. At least at home or in more silent rehearsals I can't feel enough vibration under my fingers. From time to time I was also thinking of adding a bass shaker/ but shaker to my Nord. But I have never tried it. Once I was given the stool from our drummer. He had a shaker installed on it. It was nice to play and to feel the beat. But I have never mounted it to the keys.
I don't think that it will harm the piano as long as you don't go up to high in the volume of this but maybe there will be ugly noises or resonances if you mount it to the attachment screws holes for the Nord feet.
It should be worth a try.

Is somebody around who owns this gear an can try it for us?

Some ideas: Maybe he a small set of monitors could fit somehow on top (the new Nord ones maybe if they are not too large)? This will create a physical connection between the monitors and the board. Alternatively you can do as I sometimes do in crammed spaces, which is sitting on top of my monitor/loudspeaker. I have an RFC HD10 and the height fits well for me when playing. It's a little uncomfortable if you don't have a small pillow or something to sit on top, but not a problem for shorter sets.

Not alone, I understand what you mean ;)

When I had the NS2 Compact and a Roland FP4 (as HA master keyboard for pianos and Dual Keyb in general) I used to send the output of the Stage into the FP4 and use its built in speakers as monitors, with the plus of that "quasi-real piano feeling" you talk about (when playing piano patches of course).

But I would not modify a Nord Stage/Electro for that, personally.

I sometimes play a Yamaha AvantGrand N3 which has the tactile feedback of which you speak. It's fully integrated into the design of the piano and the keybed -- not an afterthought. Even though they did a good job with it, it's still not the same as the feedback you get from a real acoustic grand. Good thing real acoustic pianos will be around for a while ...

Best of luck!
I think I have gear issues ....

All the well-constructed acoustic grands and uprights I've played through the years have cabinet resonance that, due to their sheer mass, travels through the floor, and up through your feet and piano bench.

But not through your fingertips. The digital Kawai at my church does this. Three years, week in and week out, and it still feels unnatural.
