Feedback and testing of Wooden Nord Stage/Piano/Grand Stand

Post by Stephen_Suffolk »

Hi All,

My first post on this cool Forum! I'm a big fan of Nord equipment, although currently I own a different Digital Piano which I totally adore playing. :)

I made my own natural wood stand to give my Piano a stable and attractive support and when my friend saw it they wanted one for their Piano so it was fun to develop the design and make an improved version.

I'm now enthusiastic to make a stand in the same style custom designed for Nord Stage/Piano/Grands. (Although the Grand version looks like it needs to be a separate design due to the extra depth)

I was wondering if there's anyone living in the UK with a Stage/Piano/Grand who would be interested testing the stand & giving me feedback so it can be perfected. I can post the parts out which will be helpful to work out the packaging/postage challenges, and then see whether I've succeeded in making it quick and easy to assemble at the other end! If it works out well then I would make this stand available for buying on Etsy. You can see all the features of the one I already have listed on Etsy for the Yamaha P45 & Kawai ES110 here: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/EmotiveDes ... form-mcnav

I'm currently thinking of eventually offering various wood stain finishes & of course a Nord red :)

Aside from finding a Nord owner in the UK who would like to test the stand (The incentive is that they could keep the test stand in return for their feedback), I welcome all your thoughts on what would make this a great stand.

Thanks all! Steve

nice work Stephen... and a big welcome to the forum :yourock: I like the way you've hidden the cables

It seems to me the camera angle shows the sustain pedal centred in the frame.
I believe that it is normal for the sustain pedal to be aligned closer with A above middle C.

cheers, Allan

Hi Allan, Thanks for your kind welcome to the forum :-) Much appreciated!

That's good to hear that you like the cable management idea. It creates such a clean look when the cables are tucked away - It was worth the extra effort to incorporate! I've reviewed a range of clips and these ones have a gum base instead of foam, so can be removed cleanly without leaving any foam residue behind. Each set-up will have a optimal solution to take up all the cable slack, so I can enclose additional clips for the customer to add as they see fit to create the perfect solution for their set=up.

I love your tip about the pedal position! That's an improvement already :-) I can incorporate a location feature on the cross beam for the pedal to be quickly aligned in this location, 117mm to the right of centre.

I've just updated my first message to say that I'd be interested to connect with anyone in the UK who wants to help receive a stand for testing feedback and provide some photos. I anticipate that I won't be wanting to recover the test stand so there's an incentive for anyone who's interested :-)

Steve

Steve - looks great - re pedals - don’t forget your target Nords have the triple pedal - you should check the specs on the Nord website for dimensions...

Also wonder whether brining the legs inside the outer dimensions of the keyboard would have a slightly cleaner look? Don’t know if you can accomplish the same stability but it looks odd to me to see the edges of the top of the stand exceed the width of the instrument itself.

Great idea and wish you a lot of luck! I recently purchased a 2.5’ grand piano shell for my Nord Grand which is intended to provide an illusion - yours is not meant for that purpose and looks most sturdy!! Good luck!!

Hi Steve,

Those are all great suggestions! Yes, you're right. I can see that the stand must fit like a glove around the Nord triple pedal. Got it :-)
You're winning me over with your suggestion of bringing the legs inside the Nord keyboard outer dimensions. :-) That would indeed look cleaner!

Oh, I had not heard about using a 2.5" Grand piano shell before and have just looked it up. Wow, that's going to make an impressive statement!

In other news I've often wondered what the collective noun for Steve's should be. The leading 2 candidates are "A pride of Steves" and "A flamboyance of Steves"!

A bevy of Steves?

Here’s a pic of my Nord Grand in the small shell. I posted details about it elsewhere...

You can see how the triple pedal fits. I like your stand very much! Good luck!!

Hi Steve,

Your Nord set-up on the Baby Grand shell looks exquisite! Haha, I like your suggested collective noun for Steves

This weekend I visited a local Music shop in Cambridge UK (Professional Music Technology) and they set the Nord Piano from the window up for me to to play. Loved it. I also cheekily took some measurements of the mounting hole positions and key height from the base which has allowed me to develop this design featuring headphone stands on both sides:

I could now make this stand ready for someone to try out :-)
