Does anybody use Yamaha DXR10 active speakers

Postby Macko » 27 Jun 2018, 16:36

I want a pair of (active/powered) speakers to run my Nord Electro 6HP keyboard in stereo at gigs.
I haven't got any roadies and I don't expect to play Wembley Stadium so a colleague has suggested these and they are not too big or too heavy.
I will be playing with a jazz band, not too loud and at gigs such as the local jazz club and pubs and clubs.
Bigger venues usually have their own pa system and somebody to do the sound for you.
Does anybody have any experience of these speakers or would they like to suggest anything else please.
It's a good piano sound I am trying to achieve.

I've got the DXR10 and have also used DXR12 as PA speakers. They are very good for the money; great sound, flexible (multiple inputs), robust.
For more money, the QSC k8.2 or 10 are very highly recommended by people on this forum.

Thanks spradders. My piano playing colleague who suggested the Yamaha DXR10 also suggested QSC K10 too.
Only one supplier has the QSCK10 in stock and it's not discounted at all yet, the others all say it is unavailable. They must have replaced it with a newer model.
I'll do some research and find out what's new. Cheers for now.

Spradders, i've just come across the QSC 10.2. This is in stock in place of the QSC 10. The websites I looked at show both speakers but don't direct you to the 10.2 when they tell you that the 10 in unavailable. I suppose I need to find out if the QSCK10.2 gives a better sound than the Yamaha DXR10. What is nice about the QSC is that it has handles on the sides making it easier to lift up compared to the Yamaha which has one handle at the top.

Just to clarify? The QSC K8, K10 and K12 are the previous generation. You can find them used, with my preference being the K8. Great value for the money.

QSC K8.2, K10.2 and K12.2 refer to the current generation, which was a significant upgrade in volume, clarity and features for about the same price. Of that bunch, I prefer the K8.2.

The Yamaha DXRs and DSRs are widely used as well, with many fans. As are the EVs, etc.
I think I have gear issues ....

Thanks CPHollis. I asked Gear4Music and PMTOnline which they thought was better and both preferred the K10.2 over the Yamaha DXR10. One of them pointed out that the K10.2 had a screen at the back where you can change the EQ and probably a couple of other things and I like the big handles on the sides of the K10.2. PMTOnline are giving a speaker bag away for free at the moment and Gear4Music are including stands and a small case for the stands if you buy the bundle of two speakers. I'll keep you informed of my final choice in the next few days.

I've decided to take a trip to my nearest dealer on Sunday to have a quick listen, just to make sure. Another forum user pointed out that shops may be promoting goods which give them more profit and this user got to know some of the staff a bit better and that's how they got this knowledge. I'll keep you informed of my decision. I went to a gig at a small venue last night partly because a piano player colleague has recently joined this very good local reggae band with three drummers on the back row and guitars and singer on the front. The pub has it's own pa and sound man. The piano was wired straight into the pa for mono sound and as a result it came through as plinky plonky sound only rescued by the fact that the piano player does some nice solos which broke through a bit.

Was it a Nord? That’s how they sound in mono. I sold my Roland KC350 mainly due to this.
I use 2 DXR10s for stereo monitoring. I went for these over the QSC K10 as they were considerably cheaper. Piano samples sound nice through them.

Thanks for that danrv. I made a choice today though. I went over to pmtonline at Nottingham again today and we set up a Yamaha DXR10 speaker and a QSC K2.10 and played a Nord Electro 6 HP through it. It was difficult to tell which one was giving the better sound. The Yamaha was perhaps a nice natural sound, the QSC seemed punchier, probably a lot louder. However I ended up buying a pair of QSC K2.10 s. Brought them home and set them up up for a bit of low level domestic listening in my house in stereo and was happy with the result. I'll request the use of the small concert hall at our local club in a few days and drag them out there to see how they sound on my own recently bought Nord Electro 6 HP. I'm working on doing a gig with a girl singer who likes Billie Holiday songs so I'll take her along with me. I think most pianos sound rough in stereo. When I play with some local swing bands - as a trumpet player - the piano always has this banging quality about it and of course they always play in mono probably because they haven't got any roadies to help them with the lifting. Cheers for now. Macko
