Different sound Nord/Samples in the same system

Post by steigerbaum »

Dear Nord Friends,

I am quite new to the technical stuff, I used to play acoustic piano.
I love my Nord Grand but I am still trying to find the right amplification.
I use the LD Dave System 8.
What I don’t understand is: When I play the piano sounds of the Nord library from my laptop on my PA they sound wonderful.
But when I connect my Nord to the LD System the sound is not nearly as good.
I have tried so many different settings but I don’t get any closer to the sound I get from playing the samples.
Maybe I am missing something very simple.
But does any of you have an idea what I could change in my setup to get closer to the “original” sound?
I am thinking: The problem cannot be the LD System since I love the sound on this system from my laptop.
But it can’t be the Nord either since the samples on the Nord sound wonderful, too.
Does any of you have any suggestions?

Thank you all!

Hi,

welcome to the forum!

I have one general question: what do you mean by „ When I play the piano sounds of the Nord library from my laptop on my PA“?

Nord Piano samples are a proprietary format which can be played only on Nord instruments, they cannot be loaded into a PC and played from there.

Hi,

I mean, playing the Sound demos from SoundCloud from the Nord Library on my Dave System:

How do I get closer to that sound when using the same sample on my piano and having connected that to the Dave System?

Thanks for your help!

I think that the demos make heavy use of the Nord effects sections, dynamics settings and equalizers. You should experiment with these, using your ears to try and find the best settings to your taste. That also trains a lot on the handling and functions of the Nord

Hm, I’ve done that already a lot. But I don’t get even close to the sound. It remains dull and not as energetic and bright like the sample sounds.
I was wondering: Do I maybe need a separate Equalizer? Or might it help to connect my Nord with my Mac and then to the Dave System? Do you have any suggestions what software to use for that or if that might be of any help?

I'm not sure if you will succeed. Processed music is not the same as the close-to-raw sounds from your Nord. This may be due to transients - you may need a lot of headroom. I never heard the Dave 8, I can only say I highly dislike the Bose L1 compact as piano amplification because of its muddy mids and low end.

The amplification FAQ on this forum is highly recommended.

I had to learn that you will need to plunge some money into amplification, too, if you want to enjoy your Nord. Edit: In any case, I bought my Yamaha StagePas 400 in vain - you can't use it with the piano. Two QSC K8.2 were double the price and didn't have an 8-channel mixer included; but they do sound.
