Amp for Nord and Vocals

Postby asanchezmac » 01 Feb 2019, 18:17

Hi all,

So I'm a busker and my setup is usually a Nord electro 4sw, shure beta 58 and a Roland cube ex as an amp. I'm quite happy with how the vocals sound with the roland but the keyboard is just not right. I've used it for a while now but I think it's time for change.

Here comes the question...What amp would be the best for a Nord electro and a vocal? I'd be looking for at least 60w power.
- AER acoustic?
- Tanglewood?
- Schertler?
- Any other?

Thanks!

Andrew

Welcome! Check our the Nord Amplification FAQ in the FAQ section of the website (it’s in the main navigation bar at the top of the screen). It’s really well done and summarizes a lot of the discussions that have taken place. Feel free to post any questions for clarification.

You may find this helpful also, from our resident amplification expert, Chuck. You may be best off with a powered monitor (PA) speaker

Hi,

I‘m really completely happy with my 2 Bose L1 compact. Depending on the venue and if mono would be sufficient for you, even one would be enough.

I'm assuming you have access to power, as you're playing a Nord ...

Getting keys sounding good (especially acoustic pianos) is the first order of business. Once that's achieved, you can decide how loud you want to get, how much you're willing to carry, etc.

As above, the Bose L1 Compact is ridiculously simple and light, and sounds acceptable with acoustic pianos. But it doesn't get very loud. Also mono only (unless you buy two of course) which might be OK with you.

I use mine much as you would -- vocals backed by keys. You can find them used as they've been out for a while and are quite popular.

A step up in both volume and stereo would be the CPS SpaceStation v3. Stereo, louder -- but mine is a heavy sucker.

Past that, I'd say you're into the world of self-powered PA units on poles. My current best-bang-for-money favorites are the QSC K8.2s and from there it just gets bigger, heavier and costlier.

I just noticed that the OP mentioned the use for the amp was busking, so battery power may be a requirement. I don’t think battery-powered amps are covered in the FAQ.

Here’s a comparison of the Cube EX vs. the Bose S1 Pro vs. the JBL Eon One Pro.
