What configuration do you play live!

Postby Quai34 » 19 Mar 2017, 11:02

I mean, with Itwo Keyboards, do you have them positioned on top of each one or a L shape?
Same question with 2 keys: 1 L, with two synths along the longer side and another one at the shorter branch of the L?
Or even two complete 6 synths in a L shape set up, two 3 tiers stand, in a L Shape.
Question, why we don't see anymore the almost square shape like Genesis, Pink Floyd etc
The question behind That is if I buy a new synth, it might go on top of the C2 and the Prophet 08 and as I usually play seated, it's a little bit uncomfortable to reach my Nord Lead with the Stage 2 and the D50 under it.
So, what shape/position do you use for keys at your gigs?
Thanks
Sincerely

Part of the reason you don't see the massive setups now is it's either all available rack-mount, or in the box, or one or two workstations cover everything you need.
I use 2 keyboards - 1 for piano touch and 1 for synth/organ, one on top of another. Best of both worlds.

I am a little bit old-school and - if there is enough space on stage - I play in a stack: lower is my Kurzweil sp4/7 or my Nord electro5d and upper is vice versa. It depends on the music we make. If we need "allround-sound", I combine the sp4/7 and the nord5. If we do more blues-rock, I use my sp4/7 or my nord5 (lower) and my hammond xk-1 as upper!
I tried to built a stack of 3 keyboards, but this looks like a "braggart" and the ordians cannot see the keyboarder.
If necessary (in this way I agree to dhbp-nord) I manage my yamaha p50m via midi out of my sp4/7, because it has the better keys playing piano-sounds, sorry nord5d!
If you look at YouTube at Brothers of Absolution, the keyboarder uses a Hammond xk-1 as lower and the Kurzweil sp76 (old Edition of sp4/7) as upper!
Three boards, I think, doesn´t make sense, if you have nord and Kurzweil (both are wonderful Instruments!)

Ok thanks, so, you two use the 2 keyboards one on top of the other. Well, as we don't gig a lot ( currently 6 gigs for the past 7 months), I practice and then tend to take the all rig on a gig. At least, I offer a "little bit of fresh air/vacation time" for the keyboard in the my rig...But I might start to play in a second band and with these two bands and a new repertoire to build I'm trying to see how to save room or to have a less complicate rig.
Thanks, I think I have somewhere a keyboard mag that was talking about what amateurs and professionals players were using depending on the gig. But I think I remember two guys saying that sometime, they go crazy and they bring almost all they got (4-5 keys plus modules etc....)
Thanks again for the thoughts.
Sincerely

OK, my pleasure! But: When we play in small clubs (we do this every friday before Christmas) I only use my sp4/7 or my NE5d - the reason: Not enough space! Enjoy! Tom

Classic rock: Nord Electro 4D over a Nord Piano 2. Spider Pro stand, drummer throne, SSv3 on a small amp stand.

80s/90s and newer: Behringer DeepMind 12 over Nord Stage 2 76. Same kind of stand, throne, amp.

Where I live, you'll see the better bar band keyboardists with weighted stage piano down below, unweighted organ/synth above. Usually a small stage, and there's just no room for the full L-shape (or C-shape).
I think I have gear issues ....

Ok, thanks cphollis, yes, I can see what you mean with small stages, last gig, we played on a 200 square foot stage but with a curvy shape at the font and the L shape for my keys was tough to fit in...The picture on the right side of any of my posts is my set up in fact...

Same here, Roland D-10 on top of NS2 88. D-10 only to send midi, all of the sounds come from my NS2.

I place my rig on stage in a way that the audience can actually see me play the keys (side of the stage, faced to the drummer).
I don't like the look of a keyboard player standing behind a 'desk' without seeing what he/she is doing.

Stacked on top of eachtother - but I have a 'kit' to the left of me consisting of laptop, audio mixer, midi controller, power supplies and possibly a rack unit/monitor later. It tends to lead to problems for me on smaller stages - front line is always taken up by guitars/singers and I share the rest with the drummer. The latter ofcourse having a footprint that's difficult to make smaller so it's usually up to me to figure out how to position my stuff and still be able to leave the stage without jumping over my own kit.

L-shape whenever possible. It requires some careful planning and a certain degree of ambidexterity (which I see as a challenge to be taken), but it feels so much less dorky and allows much better stage presence (a.k.a. it looks better ;) ).
