Thanks benny ray and anotherscott fore the organ presets list.
Very helpful!

Some organ presets sound so good on the Electro 6 when you turn the drive/comp up.

Received my Electro 6D and been playing around with it for a couple of hours.
First impression is that Organs are quite a big step up from my Yamaha Motif XF and even bigger from the Roland RD-2000.
I got what I hoped for when it comes to organ sound quality vs size and weight of the board.
Some organ patches are on board, but not too many so it takes some time building up more presets.

If I got it right, everything else but organs are samples (piano and synth sounds)
Many of the pianos and el pianos I think are quite noisy, sounds themselves are wonderful, but many have distinct sample / inherent noise attached to them.
All in all happy with the board and looking forward to dig deeper into it :)

Make sure you don't EQ to enhance the noise. In particular, the BRIGHT EQ setting will make some of the inherent noise more audible. This is the case also on the Stage 3.

But yes, it's a very nice instrument!

For those who have the E5...how useful and flexible is the sample synth section?

I have a workstation for synth sounds, but for gigs where I only need a bit of synth and want to take one board the E6 would be good...Not being able to do filtersweeps is a pain, but I could get past that. Are the velocity/filter settings actually practical and useful? Is the sample section versatile enough?

Please don't compare it to the Stage 3. Asking purely about the Electro.

You have a NE4, the Sample Synth section is basically the same in the NE5, the added controls don’t extend its versatility that much, imho (looking at what the manuals say), if what you have in mind is a “synth”.

As I understand it (never having played a 4, and currently without a 5), the NE4 had a single on/off button that enabled velocity control of volume and timbre. The E5 gives you three levels of velocity responsiveness to choose from instead of one, and when you have it enabled for volume, you can separately choose whether or not you want it enabled for timbre (brightness, via the filter). That's the extent of the velocity/filter settings you mentioned.

The NE4 had two attacks for synth sounds (slow and fast), the E5 has a continuous adjustment.

The NE4 had four release lengths for synth sounds, the E5 has a continuous adjustment. But also, the E5 knob can instead be used to adjust decay instead of release (decay being what happens while you hold the note, release being what happens after you let go). Of course sometimes, envelope/filter changes are baked into the samples themselves, so you can get some of those effects even though the keyboard itself has no such parameters.

In short, the NE5 lets you call up some synthy sounds, and gives you a bit more control over them than you had on the 4, but it's still nothing like having a real synth. No glide/portamento, no LFO/modulation, no pitch bend... whether you can get by with it depends on the sounds and functionality you need, and how much of what you need you can get just from the raw sounds of the samples themselves.

Spider wrote:Just checked, the manual confirms that the Set List function is gone. The Organize function moves, copies, pastes and inserts Programs changing their location every time. No way to create a setlist with only links to the programs. Bummer.
Since (as you say) you can copy (not just move), you'e not actually "changing their locations every time." If you Copy, then your original is in the same location as it always was, unchanged.

I don't think it's a bad thing. It looks to me like Organize can give you almost the same functionality as Set List.

Down sides:

1. If you use the same program in 10 songs, it will now take up 10 of your 416 program locations, instead of only 1 of the 400 locations in the NE5. (Though 416 programs is probably enough for most people to have plenty of room for those duplicates.)

2. you can no longer globally change a commonly used sound so that it affects all your songs. For example, let's say that you have a favorite Rhodes sound that you use in ten songs, and you later discover a way to improve that sound. With the old method, you could modify that one Rhodes patch, and all ten songs would now use that Rhodes sound instead of the original. Now after you modified the first, if you wanted the same Rhodes sound in the other 9 songs, you'd have to Copy it to those other 9 songs.

Up sides:

1. simpler operation. Like Mac aliases or Windows shortcuts, people are often confused by the concept of "pointers." There have been posts of confusion on this board, people don't understand why changes they make to sounds while in Set List mode aren't saved, etc. There may also be less confusion about operating the board in different "modes."

2. the inverse of #2 above. Since each song has is own copy of a sound, you don't have to worry about altering a Program and unexpectedly finding that it altered that sound in every song you had used that song in, when maybe that's not what you wanted.

In short, I think you can still effectively create the same functional operation as before in terms of accessing groups of sounds as Songs at a gig, but the new method is a bit simpler and safer. Some things you did before might take more steps (i.e. changing a bunch of songs that all used the same sound), but there is less opportunity for confusion or inadvertently getting results that you don't want.

Note that this is just based on looking at the manual, I haven't gotten my hands on an E6 yet myself.

Also on a positive note, I see that clav EQ (which disappeared on the E5) is back on the E6, even though (like the NS3) it doesn't appear to be as complete an implementation as the E4/NS2EX and earlier models had.

Another positive... the E6 already has the keypad function that was just added to the NS3 (repurposing the program select buttons as a direct access number pad).
