SUSTAIN PROBLEM

Postby Barbieri » 17 Aug 2012, 08:38

Hello, i have a brand new nord stage 2 sw 73, i had power on it about three times, and yesterday i powered it on, and de sustain pedal is not does active.I have tested it with many sustain pedals, and the sustain function is not activate. I updated the system, checked the configuration of the sustain on the NS, and i'm no sustain function on the NS. It's strange, because the others functions pedals are perfectly functioning on the other plugs. Help me please...thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum,

Do you have the "sustped" led on ?
My sustain pedal "system menu" is set to "auto=close", and you ?
In the same menu, the next function says : "Sustain Pedal Func : Sustain", and you ?
I have a NS2 revision B v1.60 and a yamaha FC5.

Cheers.
Frantz.

thanks frantz...
Yes, my sustped led is on, in system menu i haven't this option "auto=close", i have a "auto=triple, close, open and triple" Just this options, and the sustain pedal Func is configured to sustain function as your ns. When i wAS trying power on the sustain pedal, sometimes that i had plug the pedal in ns, the sustain remained activated all the time, even if i was not stepping on the pedal. I think it might be some bad contact in the plug into the ns..and you?

Question: did you connect the pedal after the NS2 booted?

If you connected it after the NS2 already booted and the pedal type is set to auto, it may not work properly in all cases.

When the NS2 boots and you have the pedal type set to auto, it assumes you have a pedal connected and don't have it pressed down. If you connect it after it has already booted, it won't work properly with some pedals (sustain will be active all the time and will turn off when you press the pedal). You could try booting the NS2 with the pedal connected and pressed down (during booting). If it works properly, you've not got it set to auto, but something like open or closed. Change it from open to closed or vice versa.

If sustain isn't working at all, it is either caused by a broken pedal (rather unlikely) or an incorrect setting. You could also try the pedal on the rotor/latch input with an organ sound - with the default settings, you can use the rotor pedal to switch between a slow and a fast rotor speed.

As for the auto=triple option: maybe they changed the options for an update since 1.40? On page 42 of the manual, it lists Open, Closed, Triple and Auto with Auto being the default.

Edit: if you have a multimeter, you could test a pedal and/or verify that the one giving problems works the same way as the ones that don't.

Hello, and thanks..
I have tested many other pedals, and the problem is the same, the sustain is not activating,,,I had test the sustain pedal in the rotor, and it works perfectly..and I tested too a expression pedal, and it works perfectly as the sustain pedal in the rotor input...

Maybe there is an issue with the sustain pedal jack on your keyboard? Still, it does seem more likely it is a setting problem.

Have you contacted Clavia about your issue? You can also try calling the Brazilian distributor for Nord products; you can find their information on this page: http://www.nordkeyboards.com/main.asp?tm=Distributors

I am having the same problems with my Nord Triple Pedal. Other pedals (Tip-Sleeve) work fine with the "sustain pedal" input but the Nord Triple Pedal is not functioning, giving no response whatsoever. I speculated that the wire had been damaged, opened up the jack, one wire was frayed, so I had a professional re-solder the frayed wire on the Nord Triple Pedal but that did not fix the problem.

The remaining alternatives seem to be that either the "Sustain Pedal" jack inside the Nord Stage 2 is shorted out or the Nord Triple Pedal is malfunctioning.

Has anyone else had similar issues with their Nord Triple Pedal? Any advice on getting things working again? I've tried all the settings, reboots, cable in/cable out, etc. This is an outrageously expensive sustain pedal ($300) that Nord requires us to buy for full functionality of the Nord Stage 2 - needless to say it is disappointing to have it fail and mess up my rig. I had to take apart a nice pedalboard so I could play my gigs for the last few weeks.

Thanks for any help,
Scott

When and where did you buy it? Have you contacted your dealer to inquire about warranty service? If you are in Canada or the USA, you can link me at my work address:

Pablo,

Thanks again for your help with this. I took the pedal and keyboard to Good Guys in St Paul, MN and the problem ended up being with the cable on the Nord Triple Pedal. The cable had somehow been damaged and was not sending the signal correctly. They repaired the cable and the problem was resolved.

@Barbieri: A couple of times, my NS2 did not detect the connected sustain pedal when I switched it on.
Restarting the keyboard resolved it every time.
Before going into surgery mode, I would start the instrument with the pedal pressed, change the pedal modes from the menu and some combinations of those.
Hope you can solve it.
