Drawbars on a Nord Stage?

Postby rocketman » 09 Aug 2012, 04:37

Would you want the new Nord drawbars of the latest Electro and C2D on a Stage? Trade offs are that you don't get the lights showing you the drawbar settings of a patch instantly, it's not as sleek... but of course the benefits are you get more of a Hammond Organ style control (and you can do easier real time changes of multiple bars at the same time). I don't know if Clavia is planning on making a Stage with that as well but... would you want it if they did? Curious. As for me, I don't know. I LOVE Hammond Organ drawbars. But I have to admit I also like the Nord's button/lights too.

Also, does anyone have that retrofit drawbar third party product? Does that even work on a SW73 with the waterfall keys? Maybe that would be a good have your cake and eat it too solution. What's your opinion about it?

Drawbars on a Nord Stage?

I'll let others post their opinions of the DB-1 since I'm obviously not an objective source in that regard. :p You should also search this forum and Keyboard Corner for prior discussions of it. A lot has been posted already.

As for your specific question: the DB-1 works with all flavors of Nord organs including the Stage 2 SW73 (that's actually the instrument I've been gigging with for the past year). And when you move the DB-1 drawbars, the Nord's LED bar-graphs move also.

I think that with just one set of drawbars (for the upper manual) and the normal drawbuttons you could have almost all from both worlds. So for the upper manual you could choose between the drawbars with its accessibility and the drawbuttons for the 'stored' registrations. The drawbars would remain in their position/registration even changing presets, something we actually don't have with the drawbuttons nor any midi-drawbars.

I had posted this elsewhere, but seemed relevant here -- the controllers on the Akai Max49 seem particularly well-suited for drawbar use:

Alternatively, I saw someone suggest a rocker would be better than a pair of buttons, and I agree.

I agree... that's actually what I'd like to see on the Stage.

Does anyone have any pictures of the Ocean controller on a Stage 2 HA88? Does it fit nicely, or does it need the shelf?

Thanks

I would love to have the drawbars on the next stage, AND the lights. The lights could just adjust when you move the drawbars. It would be great to have two modes available: "Catch" and "Jump", for the lights (and sound) to adjust to the movement of the drawbars.

Or just motorize the drawbars. They have digital mixers with motorized slider pots. The hardware is a bit more expensive but really even at $10 a slider that only adds $100 to the cost of the board... pretty small in Nord terms :)

Hi metalfingers,
+1.
If the Stage 2 comes with such motorized drawbars I would buy the machine at once.
btw: I own a Stage EX 76
