Bug? NS 2 stops playing when saving - unlike NS classic

Postby AlexNagel » 29 May 2012, 18:27

Hi Folks,

as happy as I am now with my new NS 2 88 - after being a happy NS 76 classic owner for years - one thing bugs me:

When saving a patch while holding a chord, the new NS 2 goes silent after pressing the "store" button - unlike the old NS classic which kept on playing / sustaining whatever sound it was playing. This is very disturbing because I often adjust settings while playing a patch and re-save it quickly to the old one. On my old NS classic I could do this while playing, now it always stops the sound which is quite difficult to deal with...

Anybody else who noticed that behaviour? I just wrote to Clavia support and asked if they maybe could change this back to how it was before.

Alex

I think the reason is that when you press the Store button, the NS2 switches to the program that is stored at the place you are about to overwrite. (Apparently, you are supposed to scroll through the presets and find one that sounds bad enough to be replaced, or something.) Since switching to another program (in this case, the same one but with the previous settings) always cuts off the sound, so does storing.

I would turn this behavior off if I could, but so far it hasn't really disturbed me.

P.S. Greetings from Karlsruhe!

Hi neighbour, do I know you? ;-)

You're right, I completely forgot about this nice new feature. When at home creating new patches it's great to be able to hear what patch you are about to overwrite.

But still it should be possible to switch off this new feature and have the old non-cut-off-sound-while-saving functionality back for live use... don't you think?

Yes, I agree. It's by far not the only thing that I would like to see improved, though.

Possible workaround: When loading a program for live playing, first store it into a live location. But then you have to remember to copy it back after playing, which is probably just as bad as having to remember to press the Store button after a song.

[I don't think you know me, but I've watched you play at Radio Oriente many times, hoping that one day I could play like that. :-) That hasn't happened yet, but at least I have played at that same location on occasion now. My first public gigs will be later this year, hopefully.]

I just found out that it's not a bug - it's a feature! ;-)

Nord introduced it in OS v1.40 (2011-10-06):

"Implemented the preview feature when storing a program/live buffer. When you browse a suitable location, the Program in this location becomes active to allow you to monitor the program that will be replaced."

I still wished it could be disabled. It's a drag for live use...

After e-mailing to NORD support about this, a guy from their german distributor answered that NORD would address this "bug" in a future update. I'm not really sure if he understood what I was talking about though...

Maybe someone from NORD's technical team reads this: Is there a chance to see a menu option for this preview feature to be set back to old behaviour / turned off?

That´s a major problem when working "live" with the stage. I use it every gig to store proper settings for the night.

I wrote to Clavia i Swedish and attached a link to your post! I will soon upgrade to Stage 2 and needs this feature badly!

Thanks for supporting my request! Let's hope they give us the option to switch back to old behaviour.

For you with the NS2, the only work-around would be using a pre-v1.40 OS - but that's no real option unfortunately...

I've learned to work around it by hitting it at the end of a song, or if that's not possible waiting until i can take a 2-second rest and tapping save twice rapidly. doesn't help if you want to save to a different program, but allows for simple course correction during a gig..

The new feature really is an improvement for most people, I think. It is very common to be tinkering with the board at home, come up with something you like, want to save it, and then need to make sure you're not over-writing something you may like. The proportion of users who are manipulating and saving their patches during live performance is probably much smaller. But it would be good to have the option.

I think the solution is to have it work the "old" way if you are saving "in place" and only do the "load the pre-existing sound prior to save" routine if you navigate to a new location after hitting the Store button.
