NS2 sticky dial

Postby surfbuddie3 » 12 Feb 2018, 11:36

My NS2 has a sticky dial (the big one near the screen). Especially when I want to change the program and change the characters when giving a name to a program. Every step that I give to the dial doesn't result in a change. Is the dial wornout? Has anyone else this problem? My NS2 was bought in march 2011, really one of the earliest NS2's.

I have exactly the same problem, also an early NS2 bought months after the introduction. Mine have been in little use so I definitely think there should be no reason the dial should be worn out. Any tips to fix it is very welcome!

That "dial" is an encoder and it can be either just dirty or (most likely) defective/broken, the safest way to fix is to replace it (there are other threads on this topic you may want to search in this forum)

I just bought my replacement encoder from Syntaur and will start the replacement process today. Gulp!

Mine just needed to be cleaned. Take it off and spray with electrical contact cleaner spray.

I once cleaned a slider with electrical contact cleaner. It cleaned the carbon contact material right off the little pc board and I had to buy a replacement unit, again from Syntaur. Only alcohol for me!

The operation was successful. I did only one thing wrong, which I will share with the forum for your amusement. I took the old one out, which required unsoldering three “legs” from the pc board. It took a long time to suck the solder out of the contact holes and it still wouldn’t budge. Finally, I clipped the three legs off the encoder and sucked the stubs out of the PC board holes. What a pain. Then, I soldered the new encoder in- three studs legs soldered into the holes. Went to install it and ... uh-oh, I soldered the encoder onto the wrong side of the PC board. Duh! And now I had to get the encoder unsoldered without clipping the legs.

All together and everything works.

Caso12, I don’t know how you cleaned the encoder with contact cleaner. It’s a sealed unit.

Right. If it is a sealed type then of course the "it is dirty, clean it" case does not apply (unless it is a problem at board contacts level)
