Re: Why the memory limitation?
Yes, that's true, FlashPlay seems to be a real breakthrough, but it should be possible for Clavia to offer at leas a few GBs instead of just 500MBs. This is clearly an intended limitation.

Well sure, it's intentional, it's part of the design, part of controlling costs (and stopping the retail price from getting too high). Yamaha uses the same kind of flash for their memory expansion cards, Yamaha sells it for $375 for a gigabyte. Which means that going from, 500 mb to, say, 2.5 GB could conceivably mean a retail price increase of about $750. (We also don't know whether there might be other limitations that could prevent doing it or from further increasing the cost, i.e. architectural constraints in the logical design, or space/heat dissipation constraints in the physical design. I'm not saying there are, I'm just saying we don't know enough to assume there are no other considerations.)

Re: Why the memory limitation?
Interesting reading this thread as I had also wondered why the memory seemed so small.
Also interesting that the new Electro 6 just released has stuck with the same 1GB as the Electro 5 range whilst the more recent Stage 3 got a boost 2GB memory.
One of the reasons I last upgraded my Nord was to double the memory so you would have thought they would have put 2GB in the latest offerings. Must be a cost restraining decision per the comments above.

Besides what I mentioned earlier, it also occurred to to me that this would require not just a software change to the board, but also a hardware change, since the Nord includes only a Type B connection for USB (allowing it to be a slave device, but not a host).

Of course. I meant in future boards - not as an upgrade.
Enabling moving sounds from USB to primary memory without computer would require a whole new key/knob usage and display options so "just" the SW part of it isn't easy-peasy either.
So it was a pure wish for future stuff.

Re: Why the memory limitation?
Given how long Nord has been producing keyboards, it's very likely they are using 32-bit microprocessors along with a bunch of DSPs. They probably haven't done custom FPGAs or ASICs, but I could be wrong. That said, it's likely that they're facing a 4GB RAM limitation (inherent to 32-bits). Smart operating systems can work around this, but Nord isn't really in the operating system business, so I doubt they'd try. I consider the Stage 3 to be close to max'd out for this architecture.

Re: Why the memory limitation?
+1 on the computer stuff....My guitarist who wanted me to "lighten" my set up (ok, it's a big one but all hardware...) wanted me to go the computer route because he was told that it was way better nowadays than any hardware and that my set up is "outdated"....I don't want and will never ever be at a concert relying only on a computer....In fact, I'm always trying to avoid computer at all cost...And you do it right with the Nord...

Re: Why the memory limitation?
Could be a reason. Then they should do something there asap. I cannot imagine a Stage 4 in like 5 years with a max of 4GB of sample storage.

Re: Why the memory limitation?
Well, if it's the case, the benefit will.be that your Stage 3 will last not only for 5 years like the stage 2 did but for 10 years...So, great....No price decrease at all....Just kidding...

Re: Why the memory limitation?
That said 4GB would fit pretty much most of Nords current samples in anyway in the larger formats?
Unless Nord starts releasing some XXXL samples that are like 500MB, 1GB per sample then at the moment there is no real need for 16GB memory on board?
