I was trying to load difference sound from sound manager to my Nord Electro 3 HP. I found out that there are few sounds with difference size for one sound, e.g. Piano. so my question is , what differences between the larger and smaller size piano sound?

The large size has string resonance throughout the range, the medium only in the middle octaves, the small not at all.
The XL is fully mapped across all the octaves.

All correct... though it is worth noting that the XL is too big to use in an Electro, it is used only on the Stage 2 and Nord Piano models (which also implement more string resonance functionality than is available on the Electro, even when using the Large and Medium sizes).

According to Nords website, the only difference between the samples is the string resonance. Does that mean that there isn't any difference between small, medium and large if you load them in the normal NE3?

No, the string resonance difference is audible even on a plain NE3. The NE3HP has a switch which lets you turn the resonance off, which should make a Med or Large sounds the same as a Small. On a plain NE3, I think the only way to turn resonance off would be to load the Small version of the piano, which doesn't have it.

I had already logged in again to write a new post when I saw you had already given an answer. (Thanks for that!) I have loaded them both on my keyboard now and I hear a very small difference, but I don't know yet if it's worth the 40mb difference...

Yes, the difference can be subtle. You won't hear any difference at all if you don't have the pedal down. But striking notes with the pedal down will sound different (everywhere in the large version, and in the middle of the range on the medium version).

Have you guys really found a noticeable difference in the M vs. L samples? Especially if you play mostly in the middle range... pop stuff with sustain pedal? I'm trying to make room for a couple XLs that I like for recording, and keeping the rest I don't use as often as Medium.

I really, personally.... can't tell much of a difference in sound between L and M sample sets... especially if you have a touch of reverb applied.

There should be no difference at all between M and L when playing in the middle range. All L adds are the resonances outside the middle range.

If the string resonances and fully mapped keyboard is your thing (it's mine) go check out the new Stage 3s, with an amazing 2GB of piano memory. FWIW, I'm enjoying it.

That being said, if you're playing in a average band with average amplification, don't waste your time. I played for years with Small and Medium samples. Plenty good.
