Amplifier

Postby lazarus 1 » 03 Nov 2011, 21:50

Hi all, i'm new to this site and was just looking for some advice regarding an amplifier for my new Electro 3, I cant afford to spend too much on one as the E3 used up most of my cash, lol, I don't gig or anything like that, its mainly for home use in an average size room, so I'm looking for a nice warm sound. I am currently using a Fender Deluxe with a Korg x3 but not too impressed with the constant humming. Any advice will be very helpful.

At home I connect my E3HP to my computers speaker system, an old Creative with 5 speakers & external soundcard setup, and I am very satisfied with the sound. Also using an old home stereo amp + 2 old but very good car speakers in wooden boxes at practicing! Seems to deliver a clean well balanced sound at a low volume. I find the NORD sounds very warm by themselves.
Cheap too! 8-)

I'm a gearslut!

I wouldnt normally reccomend anything cheap, but, i use a Logitech brand set of computer speakers with my computer that are loud enough to irritate the neighbors. They cost $25- and I use them everyday. They are adequate and inexpensive. You might need an adaptor to convert from 1/4 inch to whatever you buy.

Good luck,

If you're not gigging, I'd recommend going with studio monitors over an amp. You'll get better quality stereo sound for less money than you'd spend on a mono amp. I use M-Audio AV 40 speakers in my home studio and am pretty happy with the quality of the sound I get for $150. I'm sure there are lots of other decent quality speakers you can get in that price range.

Psychologically, there is something slightly painful about the prospect of running a $2,000 board through a $25 speaker. ;-) But if it sounds good for your needs, great! My personal recommendation for non-performance use would be to get some high quality headphones, for the best quality relative to cost.

Thanks for all of the advice guys, I now have a couple of good options to go with regarding speakers, very much appreciated, I'm sure I'll be back with more questions soon.

Musician's Friend has a "stupid deal deal of the day" for the M-Audio AV 40's. They're selling them for $99. I believe the deal is only good today (Nov. 9). http://www.musiciansfriend.com/stupid/

For gigs, I would still use the Fender Deluxe... Maybe have the tubes changed to fix the Hummm. But a nice warm tube never hurts!
