Polyphony

Postby lordy » 21 Sep 2017, 01:55

Hi,
I noticed something, when i play fast block chords repetitions, with 2 pannels (2 pianos, 2 synth)
I can feel limitation, such as note stealing, playing after. If i play 20 notes at the same time, strange things can be heard.

Which keyboard do you have? A Nord Stage 2, for example, has 18 notes of polyphony for the synth section. If you're layering two synth sounds, I assume that goes down to 9. If the synth sounds are stereo samples, it's possible that could cut it in half again, maybe someone can confirm.

That's surprising, NS3 piano polyphony is 120. Layering two pianos still leaves you with 60. Even if you cut that in half for stereo, you'd have 30, I wouldn't expect you to run out by 20. Hmm!

I don't suppose you have the Wheel assigned and experiencing my issue? I had sounds cutting out, which I have narrowed down to a particular key. I thought this might be an isolated hardware issue but some else has just commented on a Facebook group that they have the exact same issue as me.

here an example. I play a quite large chord, and all notes can not sound at the same time, listen/
May be it is normal, it is my first nord stage, it is powerful for sure, but if you can try and tell me back...

2 pianos (2 pannels) 2 synth classics (level to 0)

Do you play a full chord on the recording where all notes are played at the same time (so it should sound as one simultaneous chord)?

What is the OS version of your NS3?

Do you by any chance play via MIDI, or is this happening when the instrument is played all by itself?

The problem comes when the ns3 play alone, without midi.
It comes when piano and synth are active, with 2 panels.

It does not come when the ns play piano with organ, with 2 panels.

Logically, it is not a bug, or a problem. But it is quite surprising.
It means that if you need to play a music like a sky full of stars - coldplay, if you wonna use 2 pianos, 2 high super saw pad, on 2 panels, with big chords, you could be surprised... it is doing that sound i discover the thing.

I can not imagine what occur with a nord stage 2 or 1. What Nord think about this i don't know.

May some ns2 or ns3 user try this, playing 10 notes at the same time, 2 pianos/synth, and tell us what it happens.
If nord stages have a limitation when we play big chords on 4 sounds, we must know it. Thanks
