I have had Nord stage 1,2 and now have 3, all have had the limitation of not being able to choose an exact note but are limited to specific positions.
A big why??

Re: Nord stage splitpoint limited
Because in this way you don't get crazy trying to remember where you have set it (and they can use just a few leds rather than 80-some to help you remember)...

Re: Nord stage splitpoint limited
The Nord gives you a limited number of instruments and deliberately omits too complex options in favor of quick operation and real live control (and now, with the wide/narrow splits, more intuitive playability).
It is not intended for the kinds of performances where you have a dozen specific samples and novelty patches spread over two octaves of the keyboard (though it can be tricked into doing some of that with custom .nsmp files).
Clavia leaves that market to Kronos, MainStage and others - it is a different concept.

Re: Nord stage splitpoint limited
Yeah. It is nice to have the visual indications of the split points the way they do it, but many people also are frustrated by the limitation. I've had the thought that you should be able to over-ride the defaults in a menu, to move a split point a little one way or the other, and maybe the light would blink to indicate that it's an "approximate" rather than exact indicator of the split point. The one that bothers me is the top split of a 73, between the B and the C. You pretty much need that C if you're playing organ, and you almost certainly don't need any note above that C for your organ. So those keys above C then become essentially useless, where they could have been used for one-shot samples. Or even just silenced. The Hammond SK1-73 has an option to silence those keys above the high C. Swiping up to that C is a very common organ maneuver, and it's nice to know you can't accidentally trigger a D if you overshoot!

Re: Nord stage splitpoint limited
With the split width on the Stage 3, you don't have hard splits what would pretty much give you exactly what your asking for. You'd now be able to play the C and get mostly organ with only some of what ever is in the next split slot, but is should blend pretty nicely and you won't lose the organ sound when you hit the C.

Re: Nord stage splitpoint limited
The soft splitpoints are a nice addition but not having selectable splitpoints is an unecessery limitation on the stage 3, say you got a mono bass left and rhodes right for example. Then you dont want to hit the mono bass with you right hand stealing the one and only voice in a soft split point.
As mentioned the leds are a nice idea, but they can be used in a way to be able to freely select a hard splitpoint. For me Clavia could ditch the leds since the exact splitpoint is shown on the stage 3 display anyway.

+1, like on the Modular G2
If it's in the menu, those who don't want to use it have not to use it.
