Jazz? Pop piano ballads? Doing solo accompaniment with a singer, or just plain solo cocktail hour stuff?
No classical piece requires pedal noise, it's just about imparting a little more realism into whatever piano playing you're doing.
Similarly, how many classical pieces really *require* half-pedaling? But it can be a nice technique to use in whatever genre where the piano sound may be exposed.
