Hi, I had been looking at the Nord Drum 3P for a few months and tried it for the first time in the music store today, and surprised myself by buying it there and then I asked about kick triggers, but the guy didn't know much, so I thought I'd try the FD-8 (hi-hat) trigger pedal from my Roland TD11KV electronic drum kit. It doesn't seem to work, but maybe I'm doing something wrong. Checked the manual, but the guidance is fairly brief - it does state that "The Nord drum 3P works with a wide range of triggers and trigger signals" but I am not sure if this one is included or not and cannot find much (any) info online about this 'wide range' of compatible triggers.

Can anyone help me?

Hi Gavindytham!

I think that the FD-8 is not suitable because it is a different type of pedal, if I read the specs correctly it is a continuous pedal, prossibly built around a potentiometer. What you need is a pedal that is based on a piezo, so any kind of (bass-)drum pad or pedal, like the KD-80 or KT-10, RT-10K, also check other brands of course, ..

Hi Gavin,

Not sure but I think those 2 are switches, if so, they won't trigger the Nord drum.

A contact mic (piezo) stuck on a piece of wood might even work

You may also want to take a look at Krigg by Triggera. It's reasonably priced, fits any 'full baseplate' type of bass drum pedals and works nicely with my Nord Drum 2. I'm sure it does so with the ND3P. I'm originally a drummer and have a kick pedal around so I bought a Krigg and have been happy with it.

I'm using the Roland KD-7 here with a Nord Drum 3P.
That works nicely, very responsive and plug and play.

Providing you have a regular kickdrum pedal, of course.

Does anybody know what the difference is between pad mode types tY.rO and tY.YA? The Nord Drum 3P manual says on page 12:

"PAD MODE
Ty - Pad Mode Type: The Pad Mode type parameter can be set to ty.St for playing with sticks, or to ty.Ha for playing with hands. Parameters corresponding to different trigger types are available when a trigger is connected to the Kick input. Range, Pads: ty.St - ty.Ha, Kick: ty.rO - ty.Ya"

No further explanation is given of the kick trigger types... :-/

That must be Yamaha or Roland kick pedals, I never tested the difference between these settings on my ND2 (which has 6 trigger inputs and similar options), I guess Roland and Yamaha pads differ in dynamics/response curve and these settings help you to get better results with pads (or in this case kick pedals) of these 2 big e-drum brands.

This is what the ND2 manual says about Trig Type: "The different Trig Types that allows you to match the response of the Nord Drum 2 to the output from a pad or a drum trigger. The trigger output from different types of pads and manufacturers varies a lot. The setting of the Trig Type parameter should be matched to suit the output from the pads or triggers you use. If you have Roland pads, try the Ro setting, if you have Yamaha pads, try the Ya setting."

Thanks for your answer! Yes, that sounds right. If the kick pedal is from some other manufaturer, I guess it's just a question of experimenting with the two settings. Are there in fact any other manufacturers of kick pedals than Roland and Yamaha? I want to buy a kick pedal, but I would like to get something smaller and lighter than the Roland or Yamaha models I have seen. I had hoped a simple foot switch like the Boss FS-5U would have worked, but no such luck... :-/

Right now I'm just using a stomp box, a block of wood with a piezo, as a kick trigger. It's not very precise, sometimes it doesn't trigger at all, even though I have been experimenting a lot with the threshold and sensitivity settings. It seems there is no difference between the pad mode settings in this setup, none that I can detect anyway.
