Apologies if this subject has been covered many times over...

I'm using my Nord Stage EX as a MIDI controller for Mainstage 3 - but in particular I want to be able to assign various buttons of my choice on the Nord to select my patches within Mainstage.

I've tried to get Mainstage to learn these buttons but I just can't seem to get it to work. What am I missing?

Not all NS EX buttons send midi messages. I think you will be quite limited. Personally I use a midi keyboard with assignable buttons and knobs to do this.

CORRECTION: Virtually all knobs and buttons on NS2EX generate outgoing cc data. Check the chart near the back of the manual for specific number assignments. Program/Bank selection buttons will transmit program/bank change messages.

However, in order to give more specific advice, we will need to know more details about exactly what it is you are trying to do.

Additional: all controls are transmitted but only on the channel associated to the Panel, not via the Extern section or Sections MIDI Channels. Check the NS EX manual "MIDI Functions" paragraph and in particular "On the MIDI Menu (see page 68), you can select if the Nord Stage should transmit and/or receive Control Change messages."

However the NS is not designed to be a generic master keyboard, you can of course map those controls in Mainstage but that can make some sense only if you are not using the NS sound generators (to which they belong and modify the parameters) at all.

Have you thought of adding a Midi device such as the Korg Nanokontrol to control Mainstage, instead?

I use Mainstage in my current rig and I use the Akai LPD8 to control patch changes on hardware (NE5 + Kronos) .... as well as trigger samples/backing tracks, etc.

I did use MAinstage, just turned the big knob and next patch in Mainstage appeared. Simple and easy!
