Playing Stage 2 organ from external keyboard

Postby danrv » 16 Sep 2016, 12:46

Hi
I'd like to be able to trigger the Nord organ sound from my Korg Triton Extreme top tier board.
When playing the Hammond sound on the Nord I'm a bit reluctant to do sweeps due to the weighted action.
I use the organ sound on the Korg usually so I can do sweeps.

I had a go connecting the two and tried to configure the midi channels but the Nord is sounding on every Korg patch played on the Triton.
I realize I need to use 'Ext2' on the Korg and I really only need one Korg patch to call up the Nord organ sound with a program change number. As the two keyboards are on the same global channel though, the Korg plays the Nord all the time.
Anybody using a similar arrangement?
Any help appreciated.

Have sorted it now.
For Hammond style playing, the waterfall SW Stage 2 would have been better but I needed weighted keys
for Piano/Rhodes playing.
Great organ sounds on the Stage 2 but not easy to play on the HA keybed.

the easiest way is to turn the volume down on the nord when you play the korg and you don't want the nord to sound.
Keyboards:
  • NS2 EX Compact 73
  • Hammond SK2
  • Roland VCombo VR-09
  • Roland A800-Pro
  • Behringer Motor 49
  • Alesis Q88

Set in the Nord a Midi channel for organ A or B different from global midi channel ( if the global is ch 1 select ch 2 or ch 3 for organ sound).
In the ext2 on the korg set the midi channel you' ve choosed for organ sound.
Now you can play in the nord piano sound and play with the korg the nord' s organ sound.
Good Music!

This is how I have my Nord Laid out. I use CH 1 - 3 for my Hammond.

Nord
Ch 4 - Slot A - All enabled Instruments
Ch 5 - Slot B - All enabled Instruments
Ch 6 - Organ A
Ch 7 - Piano A
Ch 8 - Synth A
Ch 9 - Organ B
Ch 10 - Piano B
Ch 11 - Synth B
Ch 12 - Global - Everything that is enabled
Ch 16 - Dual KB - Slot B=Lower

Another note:
I use another external midi controller with some midi routing software and with the push of a series of buttons, I can route the output to any of the below channels.

My software monitors Channel 13 and based on the controllers I select on my controller, does the routing to the above channels for me. I am using Alesis VI61 as my external midi controller and Bome Software to route my midi messages.

Same here, works like a charm.

I set the Organ A and Synth A MIDI channel to the same channel that my second light action keyboard sends (not the global channel!)
If you press the Organ or Synth section on/off a few times in a way that the section is on, but the parts (lo, up, hi) are off, you can trigger that section from your second keyboard, without triggering it from the NS2 keyboard.

Maybe the Korg is programmable in a way that in every single program you can choose whether the internal sounds from the Korg are triggered or the NS2 is triggered (or both).
I use my second keyboard only as a MIDI keyboard (an old Roland D-10). So I essentially only play the NS2, but with two different actions. I think it's awesome :D

Thanks for the replies.
That's how I've done it.
I have it set so that the Korg calls up the !BookerT' patch on the Nord but as you say, I could have Piano on A to play
on the Nord and organ on B for the Korg.

Yes, each program can be set to trigger onboard, external or both.
I like the idea of a controller as a top board, playing the Nord sounds. Cheaper than a workstation but I'd miss
the useful rompler sounds.
