When using unison for fattening up a bass sound it pulsates between fatter and thinner. When disabling unison the waveform is constant in thickness. I know that unison is created by slightly detuning the osc's and panning them. The detuning could be canceling out some of the fatness sometimes because of phase, but shouldn't this be able to avoid?

No, it is not really avoidable. The physics of mixing two sounds which are slightly detuned will necessarily cause this. This effect will be especially pronounced with bass voices. Kind of a drag, because this is a favorite trick for phattening voices, but it does not and cannot work well with basses in the way you describe.

It may be possible to use two instances of the same bass program, pan one hard left and the other hard right, and throw in a little detuning. This will avoid the phase cancellation from occurring electronically. However, when you pump those two signals into a stereo system, the same phase cancellation will theoretically occur in the room where the two sides are "mixed" acoustically.

Come to think about it, maybe I should just sample it with the fat sound (multiple runs) and then play it on my Nord Wave. That should work
