EHX 's Mike Matthews 's keyboard sound

Postby Frantz » 13 Jan 2016, 13:14

Does someone loves this sound and would like to try with me to reproduce it on a Nord (electro, stage) ?

Electric piano with deep bass, nice sparkling medium, slow rotary and drive.

How can we do that ...
using the EP6 Sparkletop Vintage '67 ?
or the EP1 MK I, Low Deep or the ?

You're going to struggle to get that sound, it's very different from the Nord Rhodes. For a start, the bottom end keeps its smooth tone and doesn't "growl" the way a Rhodes does when you hit it hard, and that's kind of baked into the Nord samples. I don't see a way round that unless you build your own sound from a couple of layers of something else completely. Perhaps you should think of it as a "layered MIDI piano" sound rather than a Rhodes sound.

Hi Leo,

It's a Yamaha PF10 ( old pre midi keyboard ).
EHX is very friendly, they answered me under the youtube comments. Cool.

I could play and fun like him using my NE5.
Here is my receipe :
- switch on the NE5,
- switch on the piano section
- select EP5 bright tines
- play ( blues 1,5,4 degrees on major scale using 2nd inversion chords, G/2 , D, C )
:D
- add a little reverb (soft stage)
- switch on the NE5's rotary (which has some distorsion even when drive is at 0), krank up the drive

I begin to love the NE5 's rotray
( maybe better than NE4 or NS2 for non-organ sounds, on clavinet for instance, and EP in this case )
