Nord Beat : MIDI Sync the iPad with a DAW ?

Post by Frantz »

Hi,

Has someone already bean using Nord Beat and synced it with a DAW on a computer ?

It works partially for me, only the tempo is higher.
The ipad is connected via wifi, to a dedicated network, created on the mac via the menu bar icon menu, "create network" option.
The MIDI network session is launched on the mac, via osX 's utility, namedc "MIDI audio setup".
The ipad is connected.
Everything is setup in the daw to send midi clock to the network session.
When I press play in the daw, Nord Beat starts, and I can hear the daw's drum instrument playing.
Unfortunately, the Nord Beat displays a tempo 11 bpm higher than the daw's.
What I hear is not synced with the daw's metronome, and I cant't find why ...

Help :)
Frz.

Hi,

I just tried it with Cubase and it works ok here,

I have Cubase running on a Windows machine, I don't know the differences, but this is how I set it up:
- I have a wired connection: 2 USB MIDI interfaces connecting iPad and PC to each other
- in Cubase I set up the Sync (Control+click the Sync button in transport panel) by defining the interface connected to my PC as MIDI Clock destination
- in Nord Beat, in the Settings menu, under MIDI devices, CLOCK SYNC, I selected 'Receive' and selected the MIDI interface connected to the iPAD

The app seems a bit slow to lock on the tempo / to react to changes in tempo, it takes a couple of measures to get proper sync, but the 'StepPolyArp' app is even slower to react to changes in tempo...

I think the Sync is just a metronome pulse that is sent by the DAW, the app seems to react to it as if it were tap tempo. Human tap tempo input may require some averaging, and may take some time to interpret - but with a pretty accurate MIDI sync pulse, in theory I'd say you only need 2 pulses to determine the tempo..

- is it always 10bpm higher in your case / is the app responding to different tempo settings in your DAW at all?

Cheers,
Albert

Hi Al ;)

Thank you for writing down your setup for me.
Knowing how it should work helps me to understand what's wrong with my setup.
My problem may come from :
- the clock format ( slave and master have to share the same settings / speak the same language )
- the wifi network load
I have iRIG MIDI on the iPad side, but no DIN midi socket on my computer's sound card, that's why I used MIDI over Wifi between the iPad and the computer.
The 10 bpm difference has been very consistent during my session, last sunday.
Yes, the apps (tried Nord Beat 2 and DM1 too) are changing when the tempo is changed in the daw.
I tried many different Wifi setups, via the box, via a netgear router and straight with the computer.
I believe that I should buy some hard wired midi solution (did not want to add more cable mess but ...).
