Song ideas for an Organ/Drum duo

Post by Alpaugh »

Hey all,
I need some song ideas for an Organ/Drum duo I'm forming. Anyone have any suggestions for songs that would sound "complete" with two manuals?

What type of music do you play? What type of venues will you play? Do you play pedals? I've done these but prefer to work as a trio (guitar added) and, depending on the gig, a female vocalist - (none of us sings).

Jazz, Rock, Funk. Venues would just be small clubs...background music. I don't have pedals yet...eventually though.

RESTAURANTS like 'background music', SMALL CLUBS don't. Smooth Jazz will work for background music, Rock and Funk - not so much. Based of that, if you just do a jazz set, the usual suspects (jazz standards and show tunes done in jazz style) will work just fine. Nothing too up-tempo, nothing too slow. Don't let the drummer take any solos. Here is a partial set list I use that's very organ oriented.

1. More today than yesterday (Charley Earland)
2. Dear Old Stockholm
3. Funny Valentine
4. 'round midnight
5. Misty (Goove Holmes version)
6. Take Five
7. Foggy Day (slightly up-tempo)
8. Norwegian Wood
9. Some 'blues in F' ie. Bags Groove, etc.
10. The best 5 Jimmy Smith tunes you know

Good luck.

Hey I'm excited for you, as organ/drum duo is what I've been doing for the past few gigs. I had rarely gigged without a bass player and was reluctant to do it. But I'm convinced it's what I needed to do to move to the next level. You gotta keep the groove alive now! And you can't over extend youself. For me, as soon as I stretch beyond my skill level I lose the groove so I don't overplay. I mean people say you shouldn't overplay, but when I don't have a bass player covering my ass, I really can't overplay or I'll just blow it.

Pedals - I'm just getting into it, and my feet help more and more each time. I'm using the mojo pedals with my c2 (http://www.crumar.it/?a=showproduct&b=27) which were only $400 and came with a hard case. When the music fund fills up I may get the Nord pedals, but at least I've got something to work with that didn't cost a fortune.

No man :) if the mood allows, let the drummer take solos and trade 4's and 8's with him, and experiment with spaces in your music.

Of course I don't know what your show sounds like, but this is the strategy I go with.
