NS Classic and patch changes

Postby sbridgett » 03 Jun 2011, 16:28

Is it possible to transmit ONLY patch change messages from the NS?
That is, no note on/controller data.

Hello sbridgett,
Welcome to the forum.
Yes, it is possible to send just patch change data without note on/off data from the NS using the External Section.
It takes some doing, but it is possible.

If you can set up your receiving device "the one expecting patch changes" to only respond to a specific midi channel, you can use answer #1. If you can't set it to ignore all midi channels except a single midi channel, then use answer #2.

Answer 1:
set your receiving device for a midi channel other than what the piano, organ, or synth sections transmit on, "let's arbitrarily say channel 14".
set your NS external midi to transmit on the same channel 14 the activate the extern. section, turn off all of the green kb zone LEDs and susped and pstick red LEDs, select the prog. change and turn the parameter knob to send change.

Answer 2:
do all of the steps for answer #1 and set the midi channel of the piano, organ, and synth sections and panels to off instead of a channel #

The outlined procedure was tested with my NSEx, but using the Stage Classic manual for reference.

Cheers, Hanon.

Thanks for the quick response.
So does that mean I can store that setting as a patch and it would send program change info as I dial in a patch on th NS?

Hello again,
Any panel setting will be memorized "if saved" as part of the patch. However, the system/ sound/ midi/ extern menu changes are global and not saved as part of a patch.
The short answer is "mostly yes" give it a try.
Cheers, Hanon
