Yamaha DXR12

Hi all, :wave:

New NE3 owner here with my first post!

After my long awaited purchase of said board, I've been looking at a single active stage wedge and the suspects all started to raise their heads, QSC, EV, JBL and Mackie. Looking at the NAMM show back in January there seems to be a half decent offering from Yamaha. The DXR12. Does anyone here run one or tried one? They are cheaper than most but look strong in terms of output and build quality.....

One slight worry is the line out. I'm probably being a little blonde (i am...before anyone has a blondist comment) but how would I run a line out to the FOH desk?

I play in a six piece rock/swing band, small/medium sized gigs and I do not need anyone else in my monitor.

Am I being a idiot? All thats on the panel in terms of a line out has been called a 'LINK OUT' for linking up another DXR12 for stereo FOH pa set ups.

Don't worry everyone! hold all your responses!

I'm going for a QSC10. I've gone over it with a very helpful chap @ GAK UK and the Yam DXR12 looks like a non-starter. More of a direct FOH/dj speaker. Why would they produce the DXR range without a line out?

I have actually heard very good things about this series of speakers. Comparable or better that the QSC 10. AS far as line out, it really depends on your set-up. I use two Yamaha Cabs but line out from my sub mix to the board and the speakers. To each his own. Cheers M

This conclusion surprises me. On paper this looks like a well-thought out and well-specified unit much in keeping with its obvious competitors. I've had a look at the manual, and as far as I can see, the link out should work perfectly well as a line out. In fact its dual mode of operation allowing you to optionally link two of these units together in a stereo configuration looks pretty neat to me. Unless it really sounds sub-standard (unlikely for a Yamaha), I wouldn't rule this unit out. It's not cheap, and its price point would suggest a reasonable quality unit. If it can hold its own against the established stuff like the QSCs in terms of volume and sound quality, the wide range of features and built-in 3 way mixer could be very tempting. I'll be very interested in seeing some user reviews of it as and when.

Thanks Redleo...but where exactly does it state the Link Out has dual functionality as Line Out. I must have missed that.

Yamaha haven't really bothered to explain the Link out properly in the manual. However, the Link output *is* just a Line Out. You can link it to another DXR12, but you can link it to anything else just as easily.

If you look in the Block diagram (page 84) you can see that it is labelled "Link Out (Line)" and that it is just the output of the whole mixer section, which is presumably exactly what you need it to be as a Line Out.

If you look on Page 8 under Section 13 "Link Mode Switch (DXR series)" and look at the chart, you will see that under "Link Mode - Output of the DXR - Mono" it confirms that the Link Out contains a mix of all the input signals.

Page 8 Section 12 "Link Out Jack (DXR series)" quote: "Signals at the LINK OUT jack are line-level. Set the MIC/LINE switch on the linked DXR series speaker to LINE".

- Although it does not say directly, this is a pretty clear indication that the Link Out is just a standard Line Out with a fancy title.

On Page 5 it states: "XLR-type connectors are wired as follows (IEC60268 standard): pin 1: ground, pin 2: hot (+), and pin 3: cold (-)".

- This is the standard wiring for XLR balanced Line Outs and therefore the Link Out will be compatible with all standard XLR balanced Line Ins.

Note: To do this, you would need to set the Link Mode switch to Mono. The "Stereo" setting is indeed a special configuration for connecting two DXRs in stereo only.

So the dual functionality is via the stereo/mono Link Mode switch.

I also got a reply from Yamaha.....it reads....

Hi Chris

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the DXR12 powered speaker. To take a signal out of your DXR into the FOH desk I can confirm, as you rightly suggested, that the 'LINK OUT' would be the best way to do this. The LINK OUT sends a mixed signal from all the channels.
