Nord Electro 3 - Accident with liquid on drawbars and keys

Postby viegaspr » 12 Jun 2012, 04:39

A guy accidentally thew whisky with red bull on my Nord Electro 3 drawbars and keyboard last Saturday while I was performing. Immediately I turned the instrument off, but I am very concerned about damages.

What should I do? I am using a hairdryer on the keys and the chipset part that the drawbars are located.

Personally I would contact Nord and get advice. They respond fast.

Using the hairdryer likely prevented rusting of metal parts because of the water in the drink, but the sugar may cause sticky buttons and the acid in it might cause corrosion (which is often worse than rusting).

The circuit board behind the area that got spilled on needs to be properly cleaned by a technician and inspected for damages. Worst case, it needs to be replaced, but hopefully a decent cleaning will restore it to like-new condition. As suggested I would contact Clavia (who might refer you to the Nord distributor for your area). You could also contact the Nord distributor for your area yourself, if you know who they are.

If your Electro is no longer under warranty, you could approach a company who does keyboard/organ repairs - they should know how to clean it properly.

I have had a lot of success repairing electronics (mostly cell phones, but also a Tascam 2488) by using distilled water. It has a neutral PH and doesn't conduct electricity, therefore it won't short anything out. If you are desperate for a fix and no one wants to do it, give distilled water a shot. It's like holy water to electronics. (note, in water cooled supercomputers, they put distilled water in the lines, just in case the lines break it won't hurt the electronics) Good luck!

Hi,

a new way and relatively save way to remove a TSSOP casing component is to use a Dremel, put it onto high RPMs, and cut all the pins until you can take out the IC.

Note that some pins will move because the friction will heat up the IC's pin. It looks a bit messy but when the IC is gone you can take de-solder lint to clean each solder tab nicely

This was for me the first time that I tried it and it worked pretty well. After that I mounted the new TSSOP IC as shown in the earlier video.

I would recommend to use an old router or old phone and practice before trying this with your expensive PCB which will set you back more than $600 when you screw up... So in that regard I agree that if you can find somebody with the right de-solder equipment it is worth the money.

Good luck!
