Suggest hardware to complement NP as MIDI controller

Postby abreis » 03 Mar 2012, 20:05

Hey everyone,

I have a Nord Piano that I love, and I've been meaning to try some software synths and instruments. But the NP features no external MIDI controls, just sends notes.

Since everything is going to go through a laptop, I was thinking I could supplement the NP with some knobs and faders that I could use as pitch bend and modulation controls.

What are your thoughts on the feasibility of this?
The alternative would be selling the NP and getting a Stage 2 ( YIKE$$ ).

Thanks!

or real heresy...get a Kurzweil PC3...they are very flexible midi controllers...

Hello

I don't have a Nord Piano yet, but this looks surprising, or I missed something.

From the manual, page 25:
Controllers

In the MIDI Menu (see page 16), you can select if the Nord Piano should transmit and/or receive Control Change messages.

• If you have a Nord Triple Pedal connected to the pedal input, the sustain pedal is transmitted as Controller 64.

• If you have a Nord Triple Pedal connected to the pedal input, the sostenuto pedal is transmitted as Controller 66.

• If you have a Nord Triple Pedal connected to the pedal input, the soft pedal is transmitted as Controller 67.

• Almost all other controls (knobs and buttons) on the front panel are also transmitted (and received) as Control Change messages. This
can be used to record your actions on the front panel into a MIDI sequencer. For a full list of which parameters correspond to the Controller numbers, see the MIDI Controller list in this chapter.

The Nord Piano can transmit MIDI messages via the USB interface, when the MIDI channels with the “USB” prefix is chosen.
This is set in the MIDI menu, read more on page 16.

So as far as I understand you can use all knobs and pedals for sending MIDI control changes over DIN-MIDI or USB-MIDI.

Regards
-j

Well, this is what I get for not even trying before asking. My bad.

My question was prompted by the comments on the NP2 announcement, such as:
4. Still no external section for MIDI controlling

Do you know what they mean by 'external section'? I'm kinda new to this MIDI thing.

Thanks!

"Still no external section for MIDI controlling"

Sorry this is the first time I am hearing about an "external section" -- I have no idea what it refers too.
