Last night I was fooling around with my NE3, using the RMI Electra-Piano sounds from the Nord Sample Library, and it got me thinking. I have six RMI settings loaded into my Nord - Piano, Piano + Harpsichord, and Harpsichord, each in standard "piano mode" and "organ mode" (with a very long decay stage). The NE3 itself allows three release settings for samples and instant or slow attack. There is a very good chorus setting available (FX2), powerful 3-band EQ and of course, reverb. I realised that I had the makings of a primitive polysynth, akin to Hammond's 1939 Novachord, and with a similar range of sounds.
I haven't yet recorded anything, but this is a fantastic way to get haunting, retro sounds for soundtracks or ambient music.
