Viewing effects setting values

Postby 7sharp9 » 16 Dec 2011, 23:56

Just got an Electro 3 HP and am still learning the ins and outs. Is there a way to see what the actual value of an effect setting is in a particular program? The only way I can think of to do it is to do a MIDI controller dump to a MIDI file and then convert the MIDI file to a text file. Is there an easier way? If not, does anyone know of a program that will accept a MIDI dump and then convert it to a file? Thanks!

Hi 7sharp9,
Welcome to the forum and congrats to your E3HP and for post No. 10000 on this forum ;-)

As for your question, I think the easiest would be to use a live MIDI monitor tool like MIDI OX on your computer. When you move the knob or send a controller dump, watch out for the parameter you are looking for, e.g. By filtering MIDI messages and you will see the values.
Alternatively you could use the patch editor based on CTRLR you find in the Stage Forum (nord-stage-forum-f3/a-patch-editor-for-the-nord-stage-based-on-ctrlr-t1580.html), which should be very easy to adapt to the Electro.

Cheers
Johannes

Good ideas, Johannes. You've pointed me in the right direction. Thanks!

Hi 7sharp9,

I quickly setup the basic functioning of an edior for the NE3 (HP).
Just download CTRLR from http://www.ctrlr.org (free, Mac, Win, Linux)
Then download the Panel and load it in Ctrlr:

Nord Electro 3 HP Patch Editor

Setup your MIDI interface and Channel in the Panel and send a Controller Dump from your Electro:
* Press Shift + MIDI and select the ‘Send CC” menu item using the Up/Down buttons .
* Press the Store button to send the dump to the MIDI Out of Nord Electro 3 . The Display will stop flashing once the dump has been sent

Then you should be able to see all values in realtime on your PC and the Electro.

NOTE: This is a very first try, some values might be wrong and the values displayed on the Nord translated from the standard MIDI values 0-127 might not yet be correct, so some editing of the Panel might be needed (pretty easy in CTRL though). Let me know if you have problems!

Johannes

Reason: Put the Panel in the Download Section to handle different versions more easily and to ensure you always get the latest version

Hi Johannes,

MIDI OX has worked great for my purposes. Capturing the control dumps, logging them and then parsing the resulting file (using Perl) gave me all settings for my documentation. When I change a setting with a manual control I just look at the MIDI Ox screen to get the number. It's also been a great way to learn about all the possibilities. When I get a chance I will check out your Patch Editor which, of course, is the easy way to do it. :-)

Hi everyone,

I've been dreaming about a plugin like CTRLR for years. Does anyone know wether there's a panel file available for the regular Nord Electro3? I can't seem to find it on the CTRLR website, and I'm no good at programming...

Hi G,
just quickly did a version for the standard NE3 (basically the MIDI implementation is close to identical so just used the NE3 panel and did some editing, so here it is:

Check http://ctrlr.org and the general topic about the editor (nord-stage-forum-f3/a-patch-editor-for-the-nord-stage-based-on-ctrlr-t1580.html) to see how to make it work!

Just to remind you that Ctrlr is still actively being developed so some features might come in the futures, bugs being fixed etc., but I very much agree with you that it is a brilliant tool! You even get a VSTi plugin whereby you can include the settings in your DAW. Plus the developer is looking into getting a version for the iPAD!!

Just a reminder that Ctrlr actually does not require any programming and you can easily edit elements (For the NE3 panel, I think some slight photoshopping e.g., removing the Pot positions should be done, plus maybe changing the values that are displayed to correspond to the values on the Nord (I don't have a E3 so cannot check everything). Plus maybe some CCs might be wron or the values of discrete steps (e.g., the organ selection button) could be wrong. Please reply or PM me if you find bugs, but you can also easily change them yourself in the panel.

Merry Xmas!!
Cheers

Thanks a lot, Johannes! I have to say, the whole program is still very confusing to me, but I'll figure it out.

Thanks again!

I understand, it takes time to get used to it plus there are still some small bugs that will be fixed in the future, but let me know if you cant get it to work at all.
Cheers!

Is there a patch editor for Nord Electro 4 HP? I'd love to be able to move the splits around on some of the out of the box patches. Thanks!
