Strange Wav import issue

Postby Ricoche » 26 Sep 2016, 01:58

Hi everyone,

I just picked up a new Nord Wave OS2.14 and it works great, except one issue which is puzzling me.

Initially I imported 3 drum loop stems. ( Kick, Snare, and HiHat )
I mapped them to 3 individual keys and checked unpitch.

Everything sounded perfect in the sample editor. I imported into the Nord Wave and the samples played back perfectly. I used three fingers of course to trigger the samples.

NOW, I decided to open Cubase 8.5 and combine the three samples into one. I did this so I could simply use one finger on the Nord Wave to trigger the sample.

I repeated the import process in the Sample editor and everything worked and sounded great.
However, after importing into the Nord Wave, the sound is now pitched up a couple of octaves in sound. The sample still resides on a single key, but the pitch and tempo are faster. All parameters appear to be solid in the Sample editor and the playback is just fine with the software. It's just the Nord Wave that is not playing it back correctly. I also haven't tweaked anything at all, rather I've just been playing the OSC Samp as is. ( If I go back and import the 3 individual samples, they play fine in the Nord Wave.)

This is very strange to me and makes me wonder if there is something embedded in the file that is tripping up the Nord Wave. Cubase must have tampered with the file when I exported it or something. I can't figure this out. This sample is still in the original stereo, 44.1, 16 bit format. Maybe the Sample editor is detecting the wrong root key and even though it plays fine in the editor, the Nord Wave plays it differently according to the detected Root Key. Some old samplers do this. Not sure if that makes sense.

Has anyone experience pitch/tempo issues with files after editing in 3rd party software? If I find the problem I'll update my post. Thanks!

Ok, I think I found and fixed the problem.

In Cubase 8.5 there are algorithm options. Originally when merging the audio tracks I didn't realize the setting was on Elastique Pro. The loops I have are premade and set to a BPM of 125, so I didn't really need the Elastique Pro settings. I then switched all the tracks to Standard-Drums. I then merged the tracks and exported the audio in stereo out to the desktop. I also noticed that the previous file I tried was exported to mono, but all the other files in the Nord Wave program were stereo. Not sure if I can mix mono with stereo files. That might have been the cause as well. Not sure.

Now when transferring the sample it plays back at the right pitch and tempo. Note that I did not change any settings on the Nord Wave itself.

Anyways, I'm starting to sense the Nord Wave is a bit sensitive to how the samples are process and saved. I think I need to keep samples as identical as possible per program.
