Recording audio and MIDI at the same time

Postby Nawave » 14 Oct 2013, 15:47

hello!
i dont know if i should create a new topic for my doubts of if they can apply here.
i own a Wave and use Nuendo. im not sure if it's possible to record Midi and Audio from the Wave at the same time. I mean, i need to use the sounds of the wave and have the Midi data of those sounds.
As I improvise a lot, many times i can't remember the different programs i played, or some knobs i tweaked, or when i pressed the sustain pedal.

im very new to midi, actually i have just recorded midi a couple of times, so help will be appreciated. I dont want to use soft synths, just the sounds from the wave.

at least i'd like to know if what im asking is possible.

thanks in advance!

I created a separate topic for you :)

I assume that is possible with Nuendo. I know it is pretty easy to set up with Ableton Live and Logic Pro; I don't know Nuendo, but I assume it is not actually that complicated once you know what to do.

Something I liked about my Roland Fantom G6 is that it would always record a configurable amount of audio (10 to 40 seconds, I think). If you found you played something interesting, you could just press the big blue button and it would play back that recorded audio.

Doing something similar with Nuendo might be interesting; start it when you start playing and at the end of your session, see if there's anything in there worth saving.

You need to record both a MIDI and audio track at the same time; setting that up might just turn out to be the most complex part.

If you just want Nuendo to record an audio and MIDI registration of your playing, you don't really need to set up anything special on your Wave. The audio and MIDI might be slightly out of sync (probably not very audible, but the audio is probably going to lag behind the MIDI slightly) but that's likely not a big issue. You could turn Local Control off on your Wave and configure Nuendo to receive MIDI from your Wave and send that back to the Wave to generate the audio. The advantage of this would be that Nuendo could largely correct for the sync issues and you could use your Wave as a MIDI keyboard for Nuendo.

I would keep it simple to start with though.

I would think so, yes. See if you can set it up yourself and please let us know how it went; you might also be helping other Nuendo users, or maybe some other Nuendo user has some good ideas.
