Program increment

Postby raabix » 30 Jul 2011, 16:28

First of all hi everyone on this forum!

I really enjoyed answering the registration question to verify that I am not some random program trying to register "What is the subdominant key of an A major chord" - This also prevents Nonßmusicians from entering the forum ;)

Anyways, heres my question that I couldn't find an answer to:
Is there a midi message to increment/decrement programs on the nord wave. I am often playing the wave from my master keyboard and I would like to browse through the programs without walking over to my nord wave. The manual doesn't say anything about that and my google-efforts have ben unsuccessful so far.

Thanks and cheers,
Ruediger

Hello Ruediger,
Welcome to the forum!
Other than the program change message itself, there's no increment/ decrement program midi message that your Wave will respond to.
If your master controller is setup to send program changes, and the Wave is set for "MIDI Program Change Mode" = RCV, on the proper midi channel #, it will respond.

If not, please post back with the type of master controller that you're using and one of us will help further.

Cheers, Hanon

Thanks Hanon,

The program changes all work flawlessly. I will rather set up my midi controller with the bank- and program changes after I have found my favorites to start with. The increment and decrement functionality would have been more practical for me just to browse through the sounds. After having the nord wave for 5 days I am extremely happy with it and I wonder how I could survive without it ;)
For me the thing is that some sounds are just perfect to play in the full range on a masterkeyboard, others are more inviting you to tweak and change them like crazy directly on the nord wave as you're playing. However, I really love the instrument and I hope to have more time soon to get some of my own samples up there.

Cheers,
Rüdiger

There is no 'next program' message in the general MIDI specification. If you're on program 126 in bank 1 on your Wave and you press Up, the Wave generates a MIDI message that says 'select program 127'. If you press Up again, it will generate two messages: 'select bank 2' and 'select program 1'.

I have the MIDI out on my Wave going to a Waldorf Blofeld which sits on top op the Wave (the right side of a Nord Lead/Wave are great of placing small synth or stomp boxes on, but beware of scratches on the pretty red paint job), so I can use the program buttons on the Wave to select programs on the Blofeld. If I have the Sort Mode set to anything else than Numerical (so Alphabetical or by Category) things don't work as expected and the Blofeld seems to jump through its preset in an almost random fashion. This is because the Sort Mode causes the Wave to no longer go through programs in a linear fashion - it will send out a bank and program number for the new program. If the Blofeld itself has a non-standard sort mode (such as by Category) that is ignored.

After spending some really great time with the Nord Wave, I set up my MIDI solution as I had suggested.

I use the Novation Zero SL MK II Midi Controller that is taking care of both my Master keyboard and the Nord Wave. The good thing about this device is, that it has 2 Midi Ports and you can program each knob/button to send midi messages to either one or both channels. This allows me to keep my bank and program selections independent from the two keyboards. Just today I figured out, that you can program the buttons have an incremental mode which also works with program changes, so that each time I tap it it increments its value - which is perfect. There is no decrement mode, but good enough for browsing through the banks.

@mjbrands: I haven't checked the blofeld yet. This is something for later. I recall seeing some japanese guy in a youtube video creating some really bizarre sounds with it, but for now I really appreciate the straight-forward workflow with the Nord Wave.

Cheers,
Ruediger

If you want to check out Blofeld, you might want to download an evaluation version of Largo (a software synth) from the Waldorf site (http://www.waldorfmusic.de). They are not exactly the same, but 90% of the functionality and sound is the same so it should give you a good idea of what Blofeld can do.
