Nord Wave Sound Midi and Samples

Postby jadams » 04 Oct 2012, 01:56

three questions

1 I created my test-sound for each note and generate it to the Nord Wave, so now when I select this sound in Manager and then press shift+samp-init buttons, I hear it with the each note, but now my sound is mixed with Nord own sounds, which displayed on screen and heard somewhere in the back. what am I doing wrong?

2 how can I display the name of my sound on the screen?

3 Can I record with Sample Editor or some other way the Nord Wave own sound in midi format to have possibility edit and correct it after, if it's needed and then save as wav or other format?

You probably have a sound on slot B too. Make sure you only have the slot your working on (probably slot A) enabled. See the section on slots on page 11 of the manual.

The display shows program names. Create a program for your new sound. See the section on saving programs on page 10.

You can go from a WAV via the Sound Manager to a NSMP file which you can load on the Wave, but there is no way to go from an NSMP file back to a WAV file (apart from resampling). So the answer to your question is pretty much 'no': Sound Manager is always one of the last steps; it can only create Nord Sample files for you based on the WAV files you feed it.

Also note that MIDI does not store sound. It stores 'controller' information, such as which keys you pressed, when you pressed them and how hard you pressed them.

ok now everything works, but my named program is overwrite and rename existing program in my case 1:1 Nord Wave AD, slot A gives me my sound and slot B one of the own, then I restored it from CD because waveform of slot A is lost. so how to create and choose location for program without overwriting and rename existing, out of range 128 or as a new bank, maybe some other way?

If I remember correctly, the Wave has 8 banks of 128 programs (so 1024 in total) and all of them are filled when shipped from the factory. Some sounds are in multiple banks though - someone might have made a list but if not, I could probably make one myself (I don't have a Wave anymore).

Personally I would go through the factory programs and write down which ones I really like. You can then easily removed some of the ones you don't like; maybe copy the sounds you like in bank 8 over sounds you don't like in banks 1 thru 7 and then empty bank 8 for your own use.

Anyway, it is easy to restore sounds or even all sounds, so I wouldn't worry about erasing or overwriting factory sounds.

but can I use nord sounds through midi input for example from the other workstation software with prepared midi file, right?

What do you mean exactly? Are you wondering if you can use the Wave from an other workstation as if it was a sound on that workstation?

If you press a key or turn a knob on your Wave, it generates a MIDI message that gets sent to the bits in the Wave that actually make the sound. You could also connect your Wave to another keyboard via a MIDI cable; if you then press a key on that keyboard, the bits that make the sound will again get a MIDI message (they don't really care where it comes from) and the Wave will again make sound.

Can you describe what you would like to do or what you are wondering about?

yes it's same if Nord is connected with other midi keyboard, but can I do it with already recorded midi file, reproduced from other workstation software? somehow import or reproduced it in real time, maybe some other way..?

Sure, that would work.

For example, you could set up a different MIDI channel for both slots of the Wave. You could then only enable slot A and have some kind of lead synth sound on slot A and some kind of pad sound on slot B. You could then have something like a Roland Fantom, Yamaha Motif or Korg M3 do the percussion and send a pre-recorded MIDI song to slot B on the Wave (for the pad sounds) while you play on the Wave (slot A) to play that lead synth sound on top of the percussion (from the workstation) and the pad (slot B on the Wave, that is being played by the workstation).

If you've given the two slots on the Wave a different MIDI channel, you can treat them pretty much as two different synthesizers from your workstation (might be a physical keyboard, or software like Cubase or Ableton Live). You could also disable 'Local Control' on the Wave, which means the Wave will not respond to you playing on its keyboard. If you then hooked it up correctly to your workstation (let's assume a Roland Fantom), you could play a piano sound on the keyboard of the Fantom, an organ sound on the Fantom but played via the keyboard of the Wave, while the Fantom might be sending MIDI data to the Wave for nice pad sounds.

But maybe I'm complicating things too much here and making things more confusing for you.
