What's the difference between the Nord Lead 2X and the Nord Wave?
What's the function, and the advantages respectively?

What's the function, and the advantages respectively?

The Lead 2X can produce 4 different sounds at the same time (4 part multi-timbral), while the Wave can only produce two (2 part multi-timbral or bitimbral). Like the Lead 2X the Wave is a virtual-analog synthesizer, but unlike the Lead 2X it allows you to use samples as an oscillator source. It also has effects like reverbs, delay, etc.

The Wave has a much broader sonic pallet than the Wave, but if you're looking for a classic virtual-analog the Lead 2X might be a better choice (the Wave can make the same sounds, but the Lead 2X has 4 slots instead of two). Note you only have a single velocity layer (so you can't have multiple samples per key, like on something like a Motif) and it is not a sampler; it is a virtual-analog that can use samples.

If you like creating your own sounds, the Wave offers more options than the Lead 2X.

Btw. I think that the Wave looses an arpeggiator when compared to the Lead 2X. Check the specs on the website as Mr_-G- suggest for more details.

I have read those parameters, but couldn’t understand, would you please tell me some difference?
I want to get 1 from 2, but still no opinion yet.

The Wave, because it is the only of the two which can load samples. While many samplers can have more than one wave triggered by velocity, the Wave has only 1 (so you need to resort to controlling the VCF and VCA to make the sound change with velocity.

What sort of music do you want to do with the instrument?
Have you programmed analog synths before?
Do you want to use sampled sounds? or pure synthesis?
Will this be your only instrument? or is it to complement something else?

Good points of the Wave:

• Can make all the sounds the Lead 2X can and adds a lot of sounds the Lead 2X can't make
• Has an LCD display; programs have names, not just numbers
• The keyboard has aftertouch (the Lead 2X doesn't have that)
• It has an effects section
• More modern way of updating and backupping your sounds (Sound Manager)

Good points of the Lead 2X:

• Four instead of two outputs, each output can be routed to a separate input
• Arpeggiator (can be synced to MIDI clock)
• 4 parts where the Wave only has two (so you can have it make four different sounds at the same time)
• 20 voices (the Wave has 18), so you can play a maximum of 20 notes at the same time
• Cheaper than the Wave

Physically they are very similar. They're pretty much the same size and weight and if you'd just pick someone off the street, they might tell you they looked the same.

This is a demo on youtube I really like; it use a Wave for the lead sound. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to create a similar sound on the Lead 2X.


This one, using the Lead 2X, is rather nice too. Unless four different sounds were used (it doesn't look like it) the Wave could've also been used for this.

If you can afford it, I'd go for the Wave. I've had both a Lead 2X and a Wave and I liked the Wave better.

Btw. Demos by user Jexus on youtube are always pretty crazy and interesting since he always makes his own sounds. Here's one (he's got a lot more).


Note Jexus uses the arpeggiator a lot, so a lot of the sounds he's made wouldn't be possible on the Wave; not without using an external arpeggiator.
