Midi over USB on Nord Wave?

Postby rocketman » 04 Aug 2012, 17:07

The new Stage 2 has midi over USB but the old one does not. Does the Nord Wave latest OS have midi over USB? If not it's a shame because it's a nice portable controller for your Mac.

Also they should make a RACK WAVE! Even more portable.

The Wave doesn't have MIDI-over-USB, not in any firmware version including the latest 2.02 release. You could of course use a USB MIDI cable for easy MIDI access to the Wave. I found the MIDI-over-USB capability of my Stage 2 convenient, but during some testing the Stage 2 was able to sync better to a MIDI clock over MIDI directly than via MIDI-over-USB (maybe due to latency and overhead in USB?). I sent it a 300 BPM MIDI clock (the fastest it could sync too) and even with different MIDI interfaces I got different results; note that these MIDI interfaces themselves were connected via USB too.

As for a rack version of the Wave: it would surely make a kick-ass addition to a Stage 1, in combination with the extern section. Include a small mixer and you'd hardly miss the synth section of the Stage 2. If someone really wanted to, they could make a custom case for the Wave and house the contents of a regular Wave minus the pitch stick, modwheel and keyboard in it. You might still need to jury-rig some stuff though, like maybe connect some variable resistors to the pitch stick and modwheel inputs (in case the Wave doesn't boot without those). Might be an interesting project if you happen to find a broken Wave that still works properly via MIDI.

Yeah actually that does sound like a cool project. The reason I'd want one is so I can bring flash ram samples in a synth engine anywhere on a plane. Although the Wave is small enough to put in the overhead bin. But a rack would be even smaller and could fit in a suitcase. A rack Electro 3 with the sample flash ram would also be great for this. If you were traveling around the world on a gig and they were renting gear for you in each city it would be nice to have a way for you to have your sounds with you (besides on a laptop which is probably what I'm going to do but I'd rather have my Nords - mah nerds!).

WE want USB MIDI ! WE want USB MIDI ! :D

Now, seriously, Nord guys, we know that Wave is discontinued, but it would be awesome to have USB-MIDI functionality built in with next OS release. Thanks in advance
