Loading samples into Nord Wave ? Please help !

Postby shabfish » 13 Sep 2012, 14:07

Hello

I have just brought a Nord Wave and I'm having problems being able to locate and play sample sound that i have downloaded from the Nord website.

This is what i have done so far..

1 - I have downloaded the sounds from the nord website
(http://www.nordkeyboards.com/main.asp?t ... slib=Synth)

2 - Loaded the sounds into the Nord Sound Manager

3- The sound manager has sent the samples to the Nord Wave

4 - But.......I can't find them on the synth ? where would they be located ? I can see all the factory program sounds that come with the keyboard but i cn't find the sample ?!

Could someone please help or advise ?

You should be aware of the difference between a 'program' and a 'sample'.

A program is what you select via the rotary dial and the bank +/bank - buttons. A program is a complete sound, including oscillator, lfo, filter and effects settings. As you can see in the image you posted, you have a section for Programs and a section for Samples in the Sound Manager.

Unlike a program, a sample is not a complete sound. It is a building block for making a sound, in that it is one of the possible oscillator types in the Wave; some of the others ones are virtual-analog waves (pulse, sawtooth and triangle), FM, wavetables and sampled waves. Wavetables have a fixed length and generally consist of a single cycle of a sound; sampled waves are similar, but they include an attack portion. Both wavetables and sampled waves are built-in oscillator sources and cannot be modified.

Clavia generally uses the term Sample to refer to a collection of samples, usually of the same sound source but recorded at different pitches. Generally 2-3 samples per octave is enough for a good sounding Sample, where the Wave generates the 'in-betweens' when you play keys for which a sample is not available. You can create your own Samples using the Sample Editor, which lets you load and combine WAV files and lets you export a Sample (nsmp) file. Unfortunately there is no way to directly convert a Nord Sample file (nsmp) back to the WAV files that were used to create it.

To get started with a Nord Sample (and this is the part that probably interests you most :D) use the 'SAMP init' function. Press and hold the Shift button and then press the Vibrato button (it has SAMP init written below it, which means that this is the function the button has if you combine it with the shift button). Using the SAMP init function changes the current sound to have some default values to start with a new sample-based sound (there is also the SOUND init function to create a starting-point virtual-analog sound). For oscillator 2 the SAMP oscillator type should already be selected (select it if it isn't); use the dial below the LED display in the OSC2 section to select the sample you wish to use (you will also see the full name in the main LCD display).

This should hopefully get you started with samples. Using the SAMP init function creates a very simple sample-based sound; using all the functionality of the Wave you can 'sculpt' it into much more interesting sounds that really come alive if you play them (use the morph functionality for this).

Using samples on the Wave has a downside: you can only have one sample per key (one velocity layer). For example, a typical workstation (like a Roland Fantom or Yamaha Motif) will usually have 4-7 velocity layers per key. By changing the speed with which you hit a key (the velocity), you 'select' which sample is played. In this way workstations like that implement dynamics, which are of vital importance for making an authentic sounding (and playing) piano, for example. For lead sounds (which the Wave excels at) this is generally not required though. Using the filter and the morph functionality, you can create dynamic sounds on the Wave, you just can't recreate a convincing piano (for example).

thank you so much taking time to explain this all to me, I have found it very rewarding and interesting.

I followed your instructions and have been getting some great results from the Nord WAVE,

Glad to hear that. Clavia makes excellent instruments for people who want to tweak presets to suit their own needs/requirements or who like to create their own sounds.
