Sample library conversion

Postby Knarph » 12 Sep 2017, 18:20

Amsterdam, Sept 12, 2017.

Hi.
I'm Knarph from Holland and want to know what the easiest (if at all possible) to convert my '*.SF2' files in to one of the by NORD used library formats. (It's meant to be used on the sample player section of my Electro 5D 73.)

Next, I want to know where I can find procedures/software to convert and integrate separate'*.wav' sample files into a NORD sample and library format.

And last, any additional tips in general concerning using samples in combination with my keyboard are absolute welcome due to being a total NORD novice.

Thank you and greetz from sunny Amsterdam.

Hello Knarph, welcome!
Your best bet is to find a file converter SF to WAV and then load those in the Sample Editor. I do not think there are programs to convert to nsmp format directly, but only from WAV.

Nords only accept .nsmp file format, and that can only be created with Nord Sample Editor, that in turn only accepts .wav audio files.

There are programs that extract WAV files from SF2, and these can then be loaded into Nord Sample Editor. When the WAV files are named correctly, that should go easy.
I would try to use the Viena SF2 editor, or a program called CDXTRACT. But I haven't done this by myself.

Same here and voodoo has indicate a couple of programs which I also know of and can extract the .wav from the .sf2, the remaining tasks are to:

1) choose which velocity layer to pick up, in case the .sf2 sound has more than 1 (since .nsmp is monolayer) and get all .related wav files, using one of the tools mentioned by voodoo

2) create a new project in the NSE then load and map all .wav to the correct keys/pitch

3) (probably the most challenging part) manually recreate (set) the loop points of each mapped .wav in NSE, if a loop is needed/present in the original .sf2 sound

4) generate the .nsmp

Will Nord Sample Editor translate loop points from wav files correctly? This would be very valuable since there are many sample sets with perfect loops and there's no way to enter these even manually within the editor since the scale there is milliseconds instead of samples.

Milliseconds translate directly to samples. One sample is 0.023 ms.

44100 x 0,000023 = 1,0143 sec so I believe that will cause trouble in many cases. Or how would you enter the values for a loop exactly one second long?
One sample @44100 is actually 0,022675736961451247166 ms

Besides I believe the editor only handles two digits after the millisecond decimal point or five after the decimal point for seconds. Seems impossible to align perfectly to sample number.

It's very strange the editor won't read loops from files with loop points.

If i were to set a sample exactly one second long, I’d set it to 1000 ms.

If your precision is 0.03 ms, and the actual value of one sample is 0.023 ms, then the maximum difference between the value you’re setting and the actual sample is 0.007 MILLIseconds — for the entire sample loop.

In other words, the sample would have to loop almost 140 times to be off by ONE millisecond.

And that is assuming that the displayed resolution is what the system is actually doing, rather than just being an approximation for the human user, while the system itself is of course sample-exact. I don’t know this, but anything else wouldn’t make sense.

Unfortunately .wav loop points are ignored. Loops anyway are based on loop points which indicate specific samples positions, not time.

So the best you can do is to use a a good .wav editor to lookup the exact position of the loop points on the original .wav and then manually "match" them in the NSE (splitting the screen to have both the .wav editor and NSE visible at the same time, so you can help doing this with a visual check)

PS: 0.023 ms is 0.000000023 s so your calculation above is incorrect because you used 23ms = 0.000023 instead.
The error in analogika's approximation is much smaller, as he also has explained.

Anyway, to keep it simple, at 44.1KHz you need 44.100 samples to make exactly 1 second, easy.
