Could offer rare synth samples

Postby stayRed » 13 Jul 2012, 17:46

hello you all!

i'm new to the forum and also quite new to clavia keyboards but i got a stage 2 88 and a wave now and am totally sold ;)

i have been producing since 95 and used a lot of the classic synths. even had a memorymoog , a ppg wave, a obx or really esoteric stuff like the orgon enigiser .

it's been great fun BUT (maybe excpet the memory moog and - you won't believe - the prophet 600, i miss none of them.

especially not since i got the stage 2 88 and the wave. i never had so much creative joy with any synth before
and with them i can exactly realise the kind of music i want to do at the moment.

but since a friend of mine here in berlin has a HUGE synth collection and i might ( cannot promise) even talk the guy who bought my memorymoog in letting someone sample it
( he is quite a famous german singer, so i am not sure if he has time) ,
there are possibilities to get some lovely analog samples.

the only thing is, i am not experienced in making proper samples but this would be very important for me, since the quality of the nord library
is one BIG reason why i bought the 2 boards!

so if there is either somebody here in berlin who could help with it or if you provide me with lots of tipps HOW TO,
i would be happy to do my best to help to increase the already fantastic sampling pool of the nords.

if you have contact to clavia, you also can forward this to them, maybe they have somebody here who would be happy to get his hands on OBX, PPG 2 (!!! NOT 2.3, though this would also be possible. but the "old" WAVE2 sounds even better!) or maybe even my old memorymoog LAMM (lintronics advanced).

just let me know

cheers!

Hi stayRed!

I totally love your idea!! I love that PPG sound and it is something the Nord just cannot do. I was even considering getting the PPG Wave 3.v (the VST from Waldorf) and sample it, but this is much better!! Also, there are some oberheim samples already but none of them sound very oberheimish, so it is nice to hear someone wants to do OBs again. I am sure if Clavia does not get into trademark troubles, they will publish them on their site. If not, we will still have them here :-D

I was in berlin a month ago, but I just came back home so I cannot help you out. But I do have some tips: you do not have to sample every key. Some people here in the forum have had experiences where sampling every third or every fifth produces nice results. All you have to do is just record the notes, use the sample editor which is very user friendly, and it will use the notes you have sampled to fill in the blanks. This way the sample is lighter and sounds uniform.

Although I could also recommend you to try and skip notes that produce "leakage". I have played some very vintage analog stuff and there were some notes that just sounded bad because of too much "leakage", I do not know why. So instead of sampling that third note, just sample one just above it and things like those.

But oh well you've been producing music since before I could write so you'll probably know more of those "common sense" tips than me.

hey Gustavo,

thank you for the tipps!

i will try my best the next week (and i sure will sample every note... i know myself ;)

though being in the studio for quite a time, i really never had much to do with multisampling. strange, but that's how it is.

so, is there a way to choose good "basic" sounds ? like avoiding vibrato or other deep modulation? or can it be anything that sounds interesting?

and another thing: could it even be better than sampling straight into the nord to use a hq AD like a Burl or something similar ?

or would that make the samples sound rather different compared to the nord library ?

all the best to MX

I would think you especially want good recordings of oscillator sounds without effects, as these can be added on a Stage 2/Wave. This is of course of less importance if you don't want to use those samples as building blocks, but as a 'complete' recording of a sound on a PPG, etc. The same goes for the use of envelopes.

I would think these samples will require some post processing, as they synths they come from most likely do not have a MIDI in port, so it is hard to reproduce the same attack velocity, etc. Some voice chips may also sound a bit louder than others.

Well,

I personally incline not to do one sample per note, as that may increase drastically the file size... although I would actually do the sampling note per note and then just see how it behaves better. Who knows, maybe the file size difference is huge taking every 3 semitones compared to per note and longer intervals do not have significant differences.

I also would prefer to have cool sounding stuff, even if they have vibrato or heavy modulation. That way you could get a vibrato very different to that of the Nord, or modulation that seems impossible on the Nord. For me, one of the problems with the Nord Sample Library is that even though most sounds are at least decent, some of them (cough, cough Oberheims) seem too "basic" and intended as building blocks, replacement of oscillators, and sometimes do not sound like a sample representative of the synth. In my opinion, if you are going to go through all the sampling process you should do samples very characteristic of the instrument you are sampling, things that are not possible on the NS2 or that if done would sound radically different.

Also, you cannot sample into the nord directly. You must use .WAV to be able to import them into the Sample Editor (http://www.nordkeyboards.com/main.asp?t ... ple_Editor) that means that you MUST use something to get it into your computer first and record it into .wav (one .wav per recorded note) then import them into the Nord Sample Editor and then Generate the .nsmp file that you load into your NS2 or NW.

Saludos,
Gustavo
