Triple Pedal Piano Sound Example

Postby pablotiburcio » 23 Aug 2016, 02:37

Hello,
I'm planning to buy a nord triple pedal but I would like to know before that, if it's worth.
Someone could post the piano sound with and without the Una Corda and Sostenuto?

Thanks!

Hi
Here's an idea of how it should be possible to try it out yourself without owning the triple pedal:

For Una Corda:
If you own a MIDI cable, you could hook that up as a loop between MIDI IN and OUT and set the Extern section to send CC 67 (which is Soft Pedal). Make sure to set up your piano section to receive MIDI on the same channel as the one you are transmitting to in the Extern section.
To switch to Una Corda, activate the Extern section (ON) and rotate the knob fully clockwise (127). Turn the Extern section off again so that notes are not triggered twice. To switch off Una Corda (0), do the same procedure but this time you rotate the knob fully counter-clockwise.
(It's also possible to just hook your piano to a computer with a sequencer program and make it send the CC messages.)

For Sostenuto (I think this emulates it):
If you have another pedal hook that up to the Latch/Rotor input (or use the sustain pedal but this makes it impossible to pedal the sustain obviously). In the system menu, set the Latch/Rotor pedal to "Latch" function. Make sure the "Latch Ped" LED is ON in the piano section. This should emulate a Sostenuto pedal if I'm not mistaken.

Hello phogy,
I could not test it as real triple pedal sound because when I play a note, and send it to MIDI, it will play the note again (doubled), isn't it?
Could I program the Extern section to send only CC 67? How could I start and stop CC 67 signal?

Hi again.
What you do is turn off the Extern section once you have rotated the knob to either end. The state of the CC is "kept" even if you turn the section off - you could even disconnect the cable.
Hope this helps!

Several months later, I have found out a neat trick to use your control pedal as a Soft/Una Corda pedal.
It is based on what I wrote earlier, but makes it possible to alter whether Soft is down or not during play.
I've discovered that, for a section, if you have it assigned to a MIDI/USB channel of its own (see Extern menu for Extern, MIDI menu for others), then it is possible to have it ON but not mapped to any keys by using the KB ZONE SELECT (Shift + Section ON/OFF). That is, all the green LEDs are black, but the section is still on and for the other sections, sound can still be produced by held notes/sustain pedal. Do this for the Extern section.
Set up the Extern section to send CC 67 (in the menu) and set the PARAMETER selection to MIDI CC. Hook up a MIDI cable between IN and OUT (make a loop).
Next, morph assign CTRLPED to the Extern parameter knob (0-Max).
Now start playing and use the control pedal to change CC i.e. act as a Soft/Una Corda pedal.
