Thinking about a dedicated B3 signal chain on the NS3

Postby cphollis » 09 Feb 2018, 03:22

I do love my NS3 Compact, warts and all. So many talents!

One area I'm debating about investing it is a dedicated B3 signal chain. To be fair, the effects and whatnot in the NS3 Compact are pretty decent, at least compared with past experiences. Decent Leslie, decent reverb, decent distortion -- all stored as a preset! For my bar band scene, way more than enough.

But part of me is interested in doing better.

I'd love to have a real tube pre-amp doing the distortion. No digital thingie comes close.

My Vent II has this amazing sound. I'd like to work this into the signal chain.

And reverb. Should be the last thing in the chain, but it isn't. Annoying, it is.

So, I'm *this close* to pulling the trigger on getting all the parts that would make my B3s sound amazing. Besides the $$$ thing, it's a lack of control. Lots of discrete components to haul to every gig, connect, and disconnect. Frantic knob turning between songs. And more chances for something really wrong to happen.

My rig is very simple these days. NS3 Compact above, NP2 below acting as a midi controller. A Key Largo doing the mixing duties. Pretty freaking simple, it is.

Anyone else in this boat?

I'm with you on it, if I really go that route (With the Nord C2 or the Stage 2, but with the Stage 3 when I will have it...), I will put a TC Electronic Pedal after the Vent II. I have already thought about using a 3D printed little stand I was using for my Waldorf Streichfett to put the Vent 2 and the TC because I have no room on my C2, the room on each side has been taken by my two Ocean Beach Drawbars...

I think it's overly complicated. Go with the Vent and use internal delay on the organ signal.

I for one am very intrigued by this train of thought. I too have a Vent II, and I've been thinking for awhile now about getting a nice reverb pedal to pair with it, especially given the NS3 reverb to rotary signal path conundrum. And to that you now add the idea of upgraded distortion!

And yet the tradeoff of going from the all-in-one simplicity that comes with built-in effects to the cumbersome array of complications that arise from using a whole series of external devices...

I'm curious to know if you have any specific devices in mind for the distortion and reverb pieces of this proposed setup. If you do wind up "pulling the trigger," what exactly will you be purchasing?

In my case, I was not thinking about any tube distortion but yes, same question, which one? Because all the distortion pedals with real tube I know are mono and with tube that usually mimic guitar amp tubes, not real Leslie tube, right? But you could have both systems: one hour to two hours gig, then go with the simpler all in one system and then, 3/4 hours wedding/conventions/galas concert when you bring the whole game with the two external pedals....

Same here about the reverb.
I no longer use my xr18 because I replaced it with a key largo.
Which reverb pedals can do the job ?
I already have my vent 2. I was thinking to buy the Roland re-20. I want to have a reverb pedal with a peak indicator for the volume input.

Best regards,
Daniel

Mono is what you need before going into a Leslie sim, just like a real Leslie. You weren't thinking of going into tubes *after* the Leslie sim, were you?

Nope.

Tubes -> Vent II -> Reverb -> Killer FOH.

Yeah, you're right for the mono, it's just that I use the Stage and the C2 in stereo and was not thinking about the "normal" signal chain of a real Leslie....So, will you use the output 3 to route the organ only, then to the tube, then...Etc....? So, what "Tubes" we're you thinking about?

I have this signal chain, used it for years and it is the closest thing that I have found without spending 4k on a completely balls to the walls speakeasy AMA and a crazy set up. I also prefer the spring reverb before the leslie just like on a real console hammond... personal preference I guess

Channel 3 NS2 for organ only> Holy Grail Reverb on Spring setting (about 7 o'clock) > MXR 10 band EQ with a little boost if I want to take a solo and come over the mix> One split out to my neo vent II mono in, the other split to a 1/4" that I can plug into the 3300 or Trek preamp to my custom mini tube leslie (more on that later...)> The EQ goes to the vent and that goes out stereo to either my amp with a stereo DI or to FOH and back to my in ears. The only thing that I have ever wanted to add is a lounsberry tall and fat pedal right before the Vent II

My set up takes 5 minutes to go from cases to sounds and another 5 to go back. Super quick and slick, its all about making a custom snake and having a pedal board all ready to go. Plug a single power cable into an outlet, plug the snake's cables into the keys, rock and roll.
