Stage 3 Sustain Pedal Issue

Postby wjones » 22 Nov 2017, 23:15

Issue: Releasing a sustain pedal plugged into Nord Stage causes a sustain pedal plugged into an external keyboard to stop sustaining.

Gear: NS3 Compact (v.1.26) and a StudioLogic SL88 Grand controller.

Detail: I'm now using two sustain pedals because DualKB mode doesn't allow the sustain pedal that's plugged into the Nord to sustain the instrument that my SL88 is controlling (as made clear in the manual). Once I plug in a sustain pedal to the SL88, I'm able to sustain the piano successfully. However, If I'm sustaining notes by holding down the pedal that's hooked to the SL88 and then a press and release the sustain pedal that's plugged into the Nord- the externally controlled instrument stops sustaining. I have the sustain pedal on the Nord toggling my Leslie speed, so as I'm working the Leslie- my pianos stop sustaining.

This seems like a bug to me, but I wanted to confirm that it wasn't my mistake before cluttering up the bug tracker spreadsheet.

Thanks!

That sounds wrong to me.

How do you like the SL88?

You need to provide more details, particularly all the MIDI settings on both NS3 and the master keyboard, because if the settings determine that the 2 sustain pedals generate MIDI events on the same channel/section of the NS3, then the behaviour is technically correct.

I like it. The textured keys are more subtle than the Casio Px5s action, and I like having a little texture. The wooden keys feel great to me, and thanks to the SL88 software I've tweaked each key for a smoother velocity response. With the NS3 I had to change the velocity curve in the SL88 to a much heavier setting than I used for my NE5d, but I'm thankful it has good options for that.

I also was able to remove the knob and two of the joysticks from thier shafts and set the NS3 directly on top of the SL88. (I like my manuals close). I also like that's it's not as long as my Doepfer was.

Other than being heavy, It works great.

I'll try again.

My SL88 is transmitting on midi channel 1.

The Channel Global midi settings on the NS3 are set to:
Global: Off
Panel A: Off
Panel B: Off
DualKb: 1

There are two sustain pedals (one plugged into each keyboard).

I set the DualKB Style to: Piano.
I turn on the Panel B Piano.
The "SUSTPED" LED (up octave shift button) is on by default on the Panel B Piano.

I play the piano from the external board successfully.
The sustain pedal that's plugged into the SL88 works properly.
The sustain pedal that's plugged into the NS3 does not sustain the piano sound (as expected).
If I turn off the "SUSTPED" on the instrument neither pedal will sustain the piano sound (as expected).

However, if I'm sustaining the piano sound using the SL88's pedal and press and release the NS3 pedal the instrument stops sustaining.

I get the same behavior if I set:
Global: Off
Panel A: Off
Panel B: 1
DualKb: Off

And don't use the DualKb mode.

The only way I can keep the Nord's sustain pedal from doing this, is by turning the Local Control "Off" in the midi settings.

Any suggestions?

On a different note, I put my turkey in the smoker at about 6 am- and have been otherwise playing the NS3 synth all morning.
It's super fun. I am THANKFUL for this sweet keyboard.

I think I've heard of one other report on this somewhere, but I'm not abe to reproduce it right now (otherwise I would have tested it). I think you should add it to the bug sheet and report it to Nord -- check the sticky thread at the top of the forum :-)

I can corroborate the behavior wherein operating the sustain pedal attached to the NS3C interrupts the sustain function of a sustain pedal attached to another controller which is controlling the NS3C. Gotta be a bug. That pedal shouldn't have any effect whatsoever on the sustain of the sound being controlled by the external device. For what it's worth, I don't even have the NS3C's sustain pedal set up to control Leslie - I have a separate pedal attached and set up to do that (and operating that pedal does not seem to have any unexpected effects, by the way).

wjones, I went ahead and added this to the bug sheet (but did not report it to Nord). Feel free to edit my bug sheet entry as you see fit.

It's hard to believe that was intentional, report it to Nord.

Thanks!

It sure seems like a bug to me.
I’ve also experienced the bug on the sheet where many of the effects parameters stop functioning. That one is clearly a bug. I was glad to see it was already on the list.
