Split and Layers

Postby studio25 » 21 Nov 2011, 18:37

Hi

I'm about to order the NS2 88.
Before I do so, i need to know if it can do the following:

Split keyboard into two key zones:
lower: bass and piano layered, non shall respond to sustain pedal (set indiv. volume and transpose/octave)
upper: piano and pad/strings layered, respond to sustain pedal (set indiv. volume and transpose/octave)

I'd like the piano in the lower section to be "dry"(maybe some compressor), and the piano in the upper section to be fed with effects (rev, delay)

Thanks!
Oyvind

Yes, you can create that layer/split set-up, and it should take you less than one minute.

Only exception though is that the compressor and reverb are global effects, so they'll apply to all parts at the same time. But the other effects like delay, chorus etc.. are specific to each part, so can easily be set individually. And another thing is that each of those parts can be set on their own octave (within allowed range) BUT transpositions will apply to globally, and not to each part. In other words, as an example each of your two piano parts can be on different octaves, but you can't have the left hand be transposed 2 steps up while the right is transposed a step down, while the bass is yet transposed by 5 steps... I don't think that's what you would want to do anyways, right?

Thanks!
...by transpose/octave I ment +/- 12 :-)
Not so happy about getting reverb on the bass though ...I'd prefer a "little wet" piano and a "dry" bass.

I'll order the NS2 88 tomorrow :-)

Thanks again!

If you only want to wet the piano, I think you can do this by assigning the sound output of the synth part (which holds the bass sounds) to outputs 3&4, whereas the piano goes through 1&2. That way, the basse's signal would be dry. I'm not sure about this 100%, but maybe someone else can confirm. Another work-around is to use delay to wet the piano, combined with light reverb on the overall.

By the way, I am doing bass lines on the left hand all the time, so I often add a bass sound over (or under??) the piano sound on the lower half of the keyboard. With the NS2's reverb, I find the result very nice sounding. It never even crossed my mind that I should go dry on the bass. But that's just my personal taste....

Congrats on the NS2, you'll love it, I'm sure.

This does work. Anything that goes out of outputs 3/4 bypasses the compressor and reverb. You can set it up so that the "wet" instruments go to 1&2 and the dry instruments go out of 3&4, or just 3 or 4.

The settings are panel independent as well, so be sure you are editing Panel A or Panel B when you adjust the routing settings.
