Sound differences Stage EX - Stage 2 !?

Postby keram » 03 Apr 2012, 11:53

Hello,

on fb I already posted following question and became similar feedback. Is there anyone who could compare, too - and is there any way for Nord to fix with software update - or is Nord using different audio converters now?

"Anyone using a stage / stage ex beside the stage 2?

I noticed one thing: when using the ex with same piano or EP samples like in the stage 2, with similar setting ( or all bypassed ), and same cables, the EX sounds bit better - more brilliant, more assertive... I really have to give +10db treble for coming close, but still sounds different. Can someone compare, too?"

Thanks, keram

That difference is also there with all effects turned off on both? I think they're using different effects on the NS (EX) and NS2 and they likely work/sound a bit different.

I have an NS2, but don't have access to an NS (EX) so can't test anything. I suppose I could record something if you have a MIDI file with a few notes and a description of the setup (piano to use, settings, etc). The recording interface (Focusrite 2I2 in my case) could also have some imprint on the sound though.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I use both, an new stage 2 compact and a stage ex compact.

I tested with all effects bypassed and same volume. There`s a real difference in basic sound of the samples. The ex sounds bit more brilliant.

An example: I use the yamaha C7 Studio 2 Sample (Lrg 5.0) in both keyboards, both running with same vovox cables into RME Fireface800, monitors are ADAM P22A.

To get same brilliance I have to increase the EQ`s treble on stage2 8db! But then it still sounds bit different in mids... And: the EX has more dynamic range. ok - Maybe this could be have a reason in keybed adjustment?

Of course: The sample is similar - but ther`s real a difference... that`s why for live, I still prefer the stage ex...
