Select synth presets over midi? (NS3, NS2)

Postby anotherscott » 05 Oct 2017, 00:43

Each program has two slots; each slot has a synth section; the synth section itself has 400 synth preset locations (8 banks of 50) on the NS3, 300 on the NS2. Question: Is there a way to select from those 300-400 synth sounds by way of sending a Program Change from another device? If so, how? i.e. how to determine the MSB/LSB and program numbers to send?

Reading the manual there seems to be no way to do that, on the other hand when we use the Nord Sound Manager and double click a preset it gets selected on the NS2, so there should be a way, maybe it is done via Sysex (unless a non-MIDI command is used). Have you tried to monitor the MIDI data flowing from the computer to the NS2 when performing that operation?

I had a similar sort of question with my NE5D, how to direct access program changes. Its not documented in the manual anywhere, but the functionality is there.

I suspect that there is a way to do what your asking, but you'll probably have to check directly with Nord.

It looks like the functionality may exist, at least as of 1.1.2 where the notes say:

MSB (CC#0) Bank Change values for targeting Programs, Songs or Synth Presets have been changed. Use MSB 0 for targeting Program mode, MSB 1 for Song Mode and MSB 2 for Synth Presets.

OTOH, it's interesting that it's not listed as a new capability, instead it says the values o do it have been changed. So unless something was lost in translation, it sounds like there used to be different values that did the same thing, at least for the NS3, and who knows, maybe for the 2 as well. But if they were documented somewhere, I missed it.
