Reverb on Channel 3&4 ??

Postby wimappels » 13 Jan 2012, 15:50

Hi all !

i bought a Nord Stage 2 SW73 this week.
Now I have a question about the master effect routing:

I have a 88 weighted controller hooked up to the Nord,
and in Dual Keyboard mode i set up the piano's in slot B, controlled by the 88 keyboard => this must be routed in a different place than the organ's (played on the nord) in slot A.
slot A: organs (routed CH1 & CH2)
slot B (DK): piano (routed CH3 & CH4)

HOW CAN I SET UP SOME REVERB ON THE PIANO SOUND IN SLOT B???
The manual says that the global effects like reverb don't affect CH3 & 4.

Anyone a solution for this ??
(without having an external reverb effect unit hooked up)

Thanks in advance!

Hello Wimappels,

There is no way to have reverb on output chanenls 3 and 4. But you could direct organ (slot A in your case) to these outputs instead of piano. I assume reverb is less important for organ than for pad or piano sounds.

Thanks for the info!

I think that option sucks really... For live situations it is important that i can route the piano to a different output channel...and a piano without reverb isn't working...organ/synths without reverb isn't also!
I hope nord can do something about that cause it's such a great live performance instrument but this is really a BIG limitation...i don't understand why there are seperate output channels than...

Aren't there any other solutions?
Thanks!

I am not sure I get the reason you want the piano routed to separate outputs, can you explain?

When I had the NS Compact (and I was also using another 88 keys weighted master) I used to send the Organ to 3&4 in order to mix it separately and compensate the (quite relevant) difference in Organ output volume (compared to the other sections)
But with NS2 and latest OS I don't have this issue any more (or maybe I have the opposite: some organ patches sound too loud, but reducing volume is easier ;-) ) so I am sending all output to 1&2

Anyway, there is no solution at the moment within the NS2 and not sur ethere will ever be; you can only use an external effect unit (a programmable and MIDI controllable one if you need program-specific settings) or the mixer FX

The reason why i want the piano output to be seperate from the rest (organ/synth) is because of the PA mix & effects from the sound engineer we work with. I play mostly reggae/dub so that is important to have every instrument (i see organ & piano as different instruments) individually plugged in into the mixingboard.

Anyway...any suggestions on a cheap but good Reverb unit/pedal? :D

Give thanks!
Wim

Well it depends what is "cheap" for you :D , if it is just fo some reverb you may go for some small unit (a good-old Alesis Miniverb would sit just perfectly on top of NS2) otherwise... what about a Lexicon MX 200 (not so expensive, around 200€ for a new one in Italy, and great qualiy + not just a reverb/compressor)? We use it in one of the band I play in as general multieffect-unit (i.e. connected to the main Mixer FX Send/Return )

PS: but maybe your sound engineer may already have something for you so you may send Organ to 3&4 and have it reverberated by him in the mix..

Another possibility... Do you necessarily need to run stereo piano and stereo organ into the PA? PAs are often run mono anyway. What if you panned the piano hard left and panned the organ hard right? Then they could both come out the 1+2 outputs (i.e. with reverb) but they would still be separate instruments at the board. Maybe?

I've used a small amount of delay (at varying rates) with a short feedback to simulate a "room" type of reverb and was able to achieve satisfactory results. I used it primarily on B3 sounds that I routed to outputs 3 & 4.

Hi wimappels...
I play reggae too.....and IMHO is very important in reggae to sent separate outputs for organ and piano as you do as well,
but I think that reverb is PA buisness...... just give him the right sound.... a little bit of reverb by PA will be fine....
if you want to really KILL the skank , in my opinion ,............ a suggestion...............M1 piano sample :-) .........is in nord sample collection......
for old style skank.....bright grand....
I usually send MONO piano and MONO organ....one channel and one channel ......that's it... :-) hope it helps :-)

I do the thing with the delay also and it works. I often use a Leslie 147 for the Organ sound - and therefore i have to rout it seperate.

I ask Nord for extra Reverb on 3&4 but they told me there is no use for it and it´s also not possible.

I have a Hammond C3 - with tube Spring reverb - and its a great sound!!! Sometimes I think, Nord have to many Technicians - no Musicians in there Team.....

The best thing is to give the Stage Organ a "built in" reverb.

But this is for Nord Stage3.....
