Hi Everyone,
I’ve recently bought a Nord Stage 2 Ex and I’m still trying to get my head around it.
I would be grateful if you could comment on this post with your favourite Piano and E Piano sounds to use
For live and studio work.
Thanks in advance

Re: Recommended Sounds for Stage 2 Ex 88
For me, live it's the Yamaha Bright Grand (should be number 3) for acoustic piano. Nothing else cuts through a band so well, apart from maybe the first upright piano which I use for rock or Motown stuff. For the EPs, I like the Nefertiti Rhodes (number 8) the best, with lots of treble and mids (at 2.5khz) added and the bass taken out slightly, and the Amped Wurlitzer.
Hope that helps!

Unlike many others I use the Studio Grand 1 a lot. It's my bread and butter piano.
Also like the Imperial Grand.
For Rhodes I use three basic program quite often:
Nefertiti (nr.8) with twin amp, Tines Amped (nr.7) with JC amp and Bright Tines (nr.5) with chorus and twin amp.
On my Stage2 HA88 velocity is set on 2 while playing Rhodes, to get that 'bark' a little easier.

I use the pianos which have been used for the original songs...
But I really like to play around with all different pianos
My "standard" is the Boesendorfer grand

Among the grands, my favourites are
- Bright grand for live use in an electric band. Clear, cuts through any mix
- jazz or acoustic gigs, Imperial grand (deeper, more woody tone) or Silver grand (very airy and bright but not shallow, very wide stereo image)
For uprights, I love the old faithful Black upright and the lovely Mellow upright.
But then again, everyone has different taste, ears and musical situations, you should really give a good test drive to each of them!
You have lots of memory in your 2EX, you could load as many pianos as possible in small or medium format, to compare them side by side.
Then when you've found your favourites, keep only those in L/XL format
(btw, in a mix nobody will hear the difference between XL, L or even M samples)

Spider, its interesting what you saying about the XL to L size. That people won't pick it up in a mix?
I did wonder about that. I could always maybe upgrade if I'm doing a recording etc.

On headphones or good monitor speakers, the difference between S, M and L is noticeable. Not huge, but it's there.
Between L and XL it's really hard to tell, even in such a perfect listening environment.
Of course, in a solo-acoustic gig, or in a theatre (or for studio recording), I would go for the best possible sound quality.
But in the typical club gig with a loud electric band and people making noise, such subtleties are completely lost.
Some players even deliberately choose S-size samples, because they're less complex (no string resonance) and may actually be more punchy and sit better in a dense mix.
YMMV...
