Question from Song mode - Stage 3

Postby Sampadi » 14 Jan 2018, 14:18

Hi,

I have tried to add and arrange sounds to songs with Song edit manually(Stage 3), but it is true that I can choose sounds only from the program list Bank from A to F or upwards?(No samples or other sounds is not allowed to add to song list?)

When I push Song mode and shift I get this green light blinking, but I can can only turn the list button to choose sounds between A to F banks from the program list, am I right? when I push shift and turn list nothing happens, I cannot choose sound from piano, organ or synth or sample. Seems very complicated, maybe there is something I do not understand. I have seen some very basic video but is there any proper and deeper video about this issue in You tube. I would like to add all the good Nord sounds and samples to my songs, but right now it seems impossible.

I also tried to use Nord Sound manager(Windows 10) for this same purpose, but unfortunately it seems to be useless to add any sounds from other banks to make personally list of songs and sounds, it is not possible and does not work. I copied sounds with the dual view from all 300 hundred sounds the new G bank, what I can see in keyboard, but I realize that I cannot copy and paste sounds from the other banks like piano, samples or synths. I cannot make proper simple sound list to keyboard with all the 20 songs we play with our cover band at the moment. There is something I do not understand

Can somebody help me out of this? :thanks:

Song Mode is just a reference that allows you to choose any program you’ve saved as a preset on the Nord Stage.
If you edit that program, the sound in the Song will change, as well, since it’s just referring to the actual program.

Synth presets, individual pianos, and samples are not programs, but merely basic ingredients that can used to create a program.

Song Mode is like a cookbook - a collection of recipes. The cookbook won’t list “potatoes” or “broccoli”, but will list only recipes that may or may not include them.

Ok, I understand and thank you about your an explanatory reply.

So you think that Nord Stage 3 "Song mode" and "Sound Manager" is like menu in restaurant: "You can order beefsteak or any other food you want from the kitchen, but you always get only bean soup, because you are sitting at the wrong dinner table".

I am bit surprised! I understand some programming and worked with many music software's for years, it seems that Nord Stage 3 itself needs a lot of programming to make it to easy to use without borders.(User friendly)

In my opinion and inside this global information/computer world, I think that this highly expensive "Nord Stage 3" should be at the higher programming level, where user can easily program and cook his/her own recipes with list of “potatoes” or “broccoli” if needed, If restaurant customer wants mustard to ice cream, waiter can say: "Ok it sounds very strange, but it is possible if you want to".

It seems to me that you have completely misunderstood what I wrote.

Every single keyboard and workstation that offers a set list or favourites function works exactly the same way:

You have your banks of programs, and then you have a separate view where you can collect various presets for a set list or favourites list.
If you change the original patch, every set list that uses it refers to the edited version.

And they’re always referencing a program slot. The Yamaha Motif can’t add a sample or an oscillator configuration to the favourites; it has to be used in a program and that referenced. Same with the Kronos: you can’t just put a CX organ or a sample in the Set List; you must build a program and refer to that.

If a customer wants "mustard ice cream", the cook has to think up a recipe that assembles the ingredients for it first, before he can serve it. This isn’t "user-unfriendly"; it’s just the way things need to work.

Not sure if you have sorted out this issue yet, but song mode is really easy to use. Just use existing programs (or make up a few of your own in one of the 2 empty banks G&H) then go into song mode and pick an empty song. You will see you have whatever is saved in preset A1 as a default, probably Royal Grand 3D. To change this, hit shift, song mode. Then pick one of the 5 song parts, rotate the program knob until you reach the patch you want to use, then hit store twice. You can then name the song as anything you like. The five parts can be intro/verse chorus/bridge etc. Or in my case as song patches in a medley with a quick way of moving through them. Seamless transition is a real bonus here!
Enjoy!

Thanks, yes I have done this but I understand that I can save only existing sounds from bank A-F ==> to song mode, question is how can I add sample synth sound to G bank first if that is only way to do this? after that maybe I can store sample sound to Song mode 1-5. So I haven`t still found the proper way how to store for example lead solo synth sample to song mode list 1-5 Intro/Verse/Chorus/ Solo etc.

In my biggest complaints I meant that, inside Nord sound manager(PC) it is impossible to copy and paste sounds from piano, sample, synth or program to song or A-G banks. You can see Song list but cannot add or change anything.(only delete or rename)It seems that only thing I can do is to copy and paste or duplicate bank sounds with dual view. In my opinion I am sorry to say but for me Nord Sound Manager is little bit unfinished software, very good idea but still not ready.

I think that there is still confusion about the sound structure in the NS. Forget loading in a song a sample, you can only load a *program* that uses that sample. Samples are not duplicated, there is only one sample of each sound you have in the instrument, and many program can use that sample. The sections called Piano, Sample, Synth are components to *build* a program (and the organ section). But you never play those on their own, they have to be in a program. Once you made a program with whatever you liked, and saved it, you can put it (actually it is just a pointer) in the song list. Hope this clarifies it a bit.

On Stage 3 I've stored my own programs from bank G onwards. Actually I kept factory settings as is.
My programs means adapted factory songs or brandnew made by samples or synth or whatever.

Well in the songlists I give each a name of the song in the sense of a setlist.
Let's say "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton is the fist song. Then I assign the programs I need to that song position 1-5. E.g. some B3 program on song position 1, on 2 perhaps another organ or whatever.

Best to be organized with sound manager

That's it

You can only use programs in Song Mode that you have already created and saved to banks A-H.

How to create a program with a sample synth sound:

1. Select an empty program or one you wish to overwrite.

2. Switch off all engines, and switch on one synth engine.

3. Switch synth type to "samp" using the button.

4. Turn the "Osc 1 waveform" knob to select the sample you wish to use.

5. Set envelopes, filter, effects, compressor and reverb to taste.

6. In the Program section, hit "Store", Name the synth and assign a category, and hit "Store" again.

You can now use the program with your sample in Song Mode.

This makes sense and works, only thing I could not do was to rename new program after I push store button, when I push Shift or some other button I get message "Store program cancelled", but anyway I can rename everything after(also with sound manager) so that is not big problem.

Ok Analogika and others, thank you very much about your patience and advice, you really saved my day. I will begin to fill samples and songs again to Stage 3 again knowing: "I can order “potatoes” , “broccoli” and ”ice cream with mustard”, everything is still possible.
